does anyone know the eBay Policy on VERMEIL GOLD. ie Gold Plated Sterling Silver - does it go in Fine Jewellery?

By the look of a lot of the listings, they go don't go into Fine Jewellery. 😞

Here is the policy:

In order to list items in the Fine Jewellery category, both the setting and the stones (if any) must meet the following criteria:

The setting must be a solid precious metal such as gold of 9 karats or higher (10 karats or higher if traded internationally), silver of 925 parts per 1000 pure silver or above, or platinum group metals of 850 parts per 1000 pure platinum or above
The setting must not be plated or filled metal
All stones in the jewellery must have the optical, physical, and chemical properties of the natural stones
Any pearls in the setting are naturally formed or cultured

You will need to list an item in the Fashion Jewellery category if:

The setting is solid precious metal, but the stones are manufactured
The stones are natural, but the setting is plated or filled metal
The main stone is natural, but the accent stones are manufactured
The main stone is manufactured, but the accent stones are natural

Rabbit, if sterling silver can go in Fine Jewellery then vermeil gold should also. It is not as though the gold is plated on some rubbish metal.

Personally, I don't think it does. I've bought a few vermail pieces over time, some expensive, some less so, and I've found the gold finish lasts no longer than gold plated.

The question is not how long the gold wash lasts but what the base metal is. Sterling silver qualifies as Fine Jewellery depending on what the stones in the piece are.

How can I find out - apart from asking eBay of course - they don't seem to know what the rules are - well, at least the people I have spoken to.

Why not - both Sterling & Gold are precious metals.

Depending on the age it could do well in Antique & Vintage.

I'm by no means a jewellery expert, however just reading the policies posted above, I would say it doesn't count as fine jewellery, as it quite clearly states that the setting must not be plated. To me that would mean any sort of plating is considered NOT fine jewelery.

Lyndal I know very little about jewellery, but here's a link to eBay's own description of it, leading me to think it would be defined as "fine jewellery"....................

"To be considered VERMEIL, the gold must be at least 10 karat (42%) and be at least 2.5 micrometers thick".

so if it's only coated with 9ct it would not be vermeil ..... is that what everyone else thinks?? or is that just a USA thing??

Rabbit, it may be a Guide written by a seller but it is well researched and is a very good summary of information available on the internet in general.

As for the 9/10 carat information.....9ct is the standard in Australia but 10k is more usual in the USA. If we are talking ebay staff here I would think they are only going to recognise 10k and decide the 9ct is not within their rules, despite the rest of the world being OK with 9ct.

What exactly is the problem? Are you trying to list something as Vermeil Gold or has someone else got something listed that you are suspicious of?

A lot of vintage/antique jewelley is listed as Vermeil Gold Wash when it should just be Gold Wash...it is a very thin layer of gold that can wear off with a few good polishes.

so, you buy a 'gold / yellow' item and pretty soon it's a 'silver' item - is that what you're saying??

so, what's rolled gold - I thought that was the old name for gold filled / gold layered? According to the definition of vermeil, the thickness of the layer/plating has a lot to do with it to? In other words, vermeil would be like 'Gold Filled Sterling Silver"??

If you want to question what is Vermeil Gold I think you need to go to the Collectables Board...they have probably got more knowledge than we have here.

But gold plated jewellery is not Vermeil gold Rabbit.

Both components are 100% authentic metals, eligible to be listed as Fine jewellery.

But you still have not answered my question....are you wanting to list it yourself or are you going on a crusade to report sellers who are listing it in Fine Jewellery.

Have you tried the Collectibles board as I suggested?
