The transaction clearly goes through paypal and paypal alone. They can see when someone has paid through paypal but they still allow someone to mark as paid? When someone marks as paid itll still show awaiting payment under sold section but on the right of the screen where it shows the numbers itll show up in green under the recieved section. Thats just asking someone to try and scam. I have received money that I haven't. Buyer just have the option to take every single step towards attempting to scam and get away with everything. How is it that winning an auction which is a binding contract, the buyer can just say nahh, I aint gonna reply to you or pay you. My lord they need to do something to help the equality for sellers.

Not everyone pays by paypal.

If the buyer does pay by paypal it shows automatically as being paid and the seller will get an email from paypal to tell them that it is OK to post the item. If the item was paid by e-cheque then the seller is advised not to post until it clears.

If the buyer pays by bank deposit they have the option to mark the item as Paid...or the seller can mark it as Paid if the buyer forgets. But the seller should never send the item until the payment is showing in their bank account.

How is the buyer scamming you? If there is no payment showing in your paypal account or your bank account then you do not post the item. Marking the item as Paid is just one way for a buyer to alert a seller that payment has been made.

When the only option is paypal and they mark as paid knowing they havent paid, especially since itll show on ebays side panel that you have received the money even though youre still awaiting payment which makes no sense. Thats attempting to try and trick you that you have gotten payment.

Do you not read well or something? Itll show you have awaiting payments. But with my only option to pay being paypal itll give them the option to mark as payment sent, which theyd be able to tell it wasnt. When payment is marked as sent itll show in the right panel that I have received a payment of that amount, but under the sold section right next to it itll show that Im awaiting payment on it.

If payment is paid by any other means than paypal it's up to you to check your bank account/ mail etc. Most buyers don't even mark things as paid. Paypal is the only automatic notification system that is linked to ebay.

Hi accountofbrandon. I think I understand what you are saying. If when you set up your account, you listed paypal as your only payment option, you are wondering why a buyer can mark item as "payment sent". Some buyers do not have a paypal account and send a message to seller requesting another payment method such as direct credit. ( this happens often ) The buyer can then mark the " payment sent" icon and a sign similar to an "E" will show in your selling account. If you have not had contact with the buyer and this symbol shows, it means one of two things. Either the buyer has intentionally or mistakenly marked payment as sent OR they have paid through paypal with a method such as echeque which can take up to a week to clear. They will have sent the payment but you may have to wait to recieve it. The same symbol shows for both occurances which can be very confusing. ( I still have problems with this occasionally ) If they have paid with an echeque the symbol will change to paid, once the payment has cleared. ( usually four to five days ) Best to contact your buyer if there is any confusion.

I know exactly what the OP is saying, I notice the same thing all the time - it happens for failed eCheques, too. The buyer goes through checkout and uses a PayPal eCheque, pending clearance, the selling notifications still indicate the item is awaiting payment, but the eBay tally of sales value vs money received shows the eCheque as payment received, and if the eCheque fails, the item is even removed from the "I'm awaiting payment for X items" selling notification.

OP, the trick to this is to not use the eBay tallies / summaries to do any selling admin. I don't even look at the tallies, really, unless it's to get a general overview of how my sales are going, but they're not exactly 100% accurate in amounts anyway.

Go only by proper payment notifications that you verify.

To answer the question, why is it a thing? Because it's eBay, and they are showing off you a summary of their guesswork - it's up to you how much attention you pay to it.

Actually, the seller is in the US and the buyer is a newly registered (joined yesterday) Russian from Georgia so being a cross-border transaction, I'd suggest that Paypal is the likely method of payment, and the buyer is either a scammer attempting to get the item for nothing, or has paid via an e-cheque. If the latter, the OP will have received notification from Paypal that this is the case. As this clearly hasn't happened, it appears to be an attempted scam.
