Paypal echeques failing ?

Have had it happen on a few occasions now, most recently the same buyer has had an echeque fail twice and is now not responding to emails.

Does anybody know why they fail ? I thought that an echeque is issued when the buyer does not have sufficient funds in their paypal account, hence the money needs to be drawn from their funding source (eg credit card) and this is why it takes the 5 days to clear. Is there a way that the buyer can make the echeque fail during the process ? I find them frustrating, firstly having to wait the 5 days and then worse when they fail.

Check your PayPal account and see if the buyer has cancelled the echeque; failing that it is due to lack of funds:-)

If the funding was being taken directly from their bank account (due to credit card maxed out or via debit card) and there was insufficient funds in their bank, like a paper cheque it will bounce.

echeque payments are taken from bank accounts, not from credit cards and will fail if the buyer has insufficient funds in their account.

If the buyer has a card on file then the payment goes through as an instant payment because paypal know if there are insufficient funds they can take the money from the card.

Buyers can not cancel echeques ONLY the seller can.

echeques are funds coming from the buyers bank account and they fail when they do not have the money in the bank account to cover the cost of the payment.

I would be opening non payer disputes after a second fail.

I certainly did not cancel either payment. The first one was a newbie and had been on a shopping spree; I don't think she paid anyone. The second one apologised and paid by bank deposit:-)

Then why is there a note saying the sender can not cancel the payment ONLY the seller can?

Note: You can also check your payment status in My Recent Activity and Payments Sent pages. If Cancel is not an option in the Order status/Actions column, the payment cannot be cancelled. Also, please note that all Unclaimed payments are automatically refunded to you if they remain Unclaimed for 30 days. If the payment status is anything other than 'Unclaimed', you can't cancel it. Instead, we recommend that you contact the recipient to request a refund.

If you've sent an eCheque, the status will appear as 'Pending.' You cannot cancel it. Please contact the recipient to request a refund.

What you are getting is the auto message from paypal.

Not that the buyer cancelled it paypal did due to insufficient funds.

Just out of curiosity,does anyone know when an echeque fails does the buyer get a charge for overdrawing on their bank account?

No Bump they don't - because nothing was drawn 🙂

It depends on the buyers bank Bump. There have been reports of overdrawn fees of $30+ and the payment is still rejected.

In the case of my bank, it can not happen....the withdrawal will just fail.
