When listing an item, where to make it "private" so that the item sold can't be seen in feedback (view item) but the feedback can.

My mind has gone blank.

Do you list with the quick listing tool (where everything is done on one page) or the advanced listing tool (where you fill everything out on one page, then go to the second page to submit the listing)? I'm not sure if you can make them private on the quick listing tool, I haven't used it for ages.

If you use the quick tool, when you go to select the category, up the top of the screen should be a link in small print to switch to the advanced listing tool. Ignore the warning that pops up and select the option to switch. When the advanced tool opens up, at the top of each section is a link "add or remove options". Select format and price and then tick the box to add the private listing option to your listing.

You will need to manually tick the box in the listing when you create it. Selecting it from the options only puts it in the listing, it doesn't tick it for you.

Just to add, unless you're selling high-priced or sensitive items then having your listings "private" may be counter-productive for you, as many buyers/bidders are very wary of "private listings" since they perceive them to be sometimes used by the seller to camoflage shill bidding.

Of course you can because you set the privacy in each individual listing. It's not an across the board setting thing, it's done in each listing.

One thing to watch, if you only want some of your listings to be private, is whether the option is automatically ticked or not when creating a new listing, as some of my BINs which I never wanted to be private had it ticked as I had recently created a private listing - I didn't notice until I'd received feedback for some items, and I can't change it now. I often set custom orders to private, particularly if I have agreed to a bulk order discount and I don't want that history readily available to all, and also to protect the privacy of some customers (if I list a custom item, I may put "reserved for [member ID] in the title and/or description, and if that or the link showed up in my feedback, it pretty much defeats the purpose of eBay hiding the member ID).

You can not make your listings private because you don't get that option until you have sold enough items to warrant it,I remember when selling for the first time on different IDs I couldn't sell privately until I reach a certain amount of sales.

This thread couldn't have come at a better time. In a bulk stock purchase, I was suprised to get a brand new pair of studded leather shorts originally from a shop in Soho (yes, think the worst, that's exactly what they are). They're obviously worth something but have not been game to list them - one reason is because I don't want them in my fb history forever etc, and I suspect a potential buyer would feel the same. LOL, this might be a solution.

Can't see any restrictions on doing that for newer sellers? Maybe that is covered in another area.

Would you like your buyers' identities to remain anonymous? When you create a private listing, a buyer's User ID will not appear in the listing or in the listing's bid history.

When to use a private listing

While there are some cases where private listings are appropriate, such as the sale of high-priced ticket items or approved pharmaceutical products, you should only make your listing private for a specific reason

How to create a private listing

To create a private listing:

Go to the Choose a format and price section of the form you use to create your listing
Select the Private listing check box

I also wasn't aware of restrictions on new sellers. All my early ones were private......only because I thought it was the done thing.
