Paypal payments made outside eBay - is it safe?

Hello, I was just wondering whether anybody else has buyers asking to do the ebay transaction off eBay. I am constantly being asked however I am too afraid to do so. First, it is really not clear whether seller protection applies to transactions off eBay. For instance, if the buyer decides to do a charge back - will I be protected? Second, I am unsure about what would happen in an item not as described dispute given that there is no eBay description to refer to.

I have checked the Paypal website and I cannot seem to get a straight answer as to whether or not buyer and seller protection applies for non-ebay purchases. Can anybody provide some insight?

I have no idea what protection the seller has, if any, but the buyer has limited protection, including the ability to start a chargeback if they funded the payment with a credit or visa debit card.

PayPal Buyer and Seller Protection is pretty much the same on and off eBay (except for Gumtree, where there is Seller Protection but no Buyer Protection).

If a buyer sends funds, it needs to be a non-personal payment for eligible goods that are being posted (what counts as eligible goods are the same on and off eBay), and if a seller generates an invoice, likewise it has to show that it was for eligible goods that are being posted.

If a payment or invoice does not reflect that, then it can (or will) compromise protections, eBay just make it easier by having a third party (generally undisputable) record of the item and delivery method.

Note that a buyer needs to log in to a PayPal account in order to pay for both Buyer and Seller Protection to be in effect - if they use PayPal as a guest, on eBay or off, no one has PayPal protection.

Unless of course they then open an account using the same email address then the transaction will be covered.

With the type of items you're selling, anyone who contacts you asking for your bank account details or paypal details to buy the item without going through ebay will be a SCAMMER for sure. Some SCAMMERS also offer extra money.

If you haven't done so already, be sure to have all your buyer blocks in place.
