Hi,

Recently I received a complaint from one of my customers about the item they had purchased. I make mostly SP bracelets with charms and beads, they complained that the beads had tarnished. I have sold hundreds of these Silver Plated bracelets and use a lot of the same beads on other bracelets, and have not had a single complaint about the beads tarnishing. The customer was quite rude in their messages but as you do, you be polite and try to come to a solution. I had asked if it has been in contact with water or chemicals as it is only Silver Plated, they replied "no". I was told bad feedback was coming my way! I was totally upset by this as I had asked them to send it back to me and I will refund their money. Never received the item, and got Neutral feedback. I was and am still puzzled by this complaint due to the fact that I have had no other complaints. Were they just trying to get their money back and a free item? Or just nasty for the hell of it? I wonder.....they are blocked now anyway, I don't want to sell my items to people like that. 🙂

They said also it was in a box for a week (not supplied by me) and it had only been worn for a week. I'm hoping I handled the situation as best I could and any feedback on how to handle these situations would be gratefully appreciated. 🙂

If you check that buyers feedback left for other sellers you'll see they leave positives but with negative comments or neutrals.

Your folllow up is fine, you have impeccable stars so I would just let it go-they obviously weren't fussed on a refund.

I also doubt that they could have sent photo's of alleged tarnishing even if you'd have asked.

Don't worry about it IMO

Silver will tarnish quickly if it comes in contact with sulphur dioxide in air pollution, which would be near some industrial complexes. When I was in Europe in the winter my silver jewellery needed just about weekly polish or it would go black.

Silver even tarnishes quickly in sulphur dioxide released from a boiled egg 🙂

Oh wow...I'm a little overwhelmed with all of your comments, thank you. I try really hard to please everyone as it's not a nice feeling when someone is complaining about something that you love to do and have hand made. I guess I will have to learn to relax and deal with things as they come, and as you said "you can't please everyone". And maybe they eat a lot of eggs.:-D

Don't let numpties get to you, you know your product is fine and if the buyer had a genuine complaint they would almost certainly have returned and negged if you didn't cover cost of return.

Nobody is going to stop buying from you because of that rather silly neut, even a neg is not the end of the world and you shouldn't take it personally anyway, it is all just business decisions at the end of the day.

🙂 Only true silver tarnishes anyhow - I'm pleased if something I buy as silver tarnishes at some point! I have bought 'silver' which stays suspiciously sparkley - this isn't the real thing.

If you ever get any other complaints (doubtful) you could explain nicely that this is a trait of true silver and add what some other people have mentioned re: triggers that will make it tarnish quicker. Turn what they are seeing as a negative into a positive

Curiosity only question here, not trying to pick holes or anything mate....

What do you think your silver plating is is if it's not 'Sterling Silver'?

There's no other kind of real silver, only sterling silver!

I think you may be confusing the differences between SOLID and PLATED mate, but they're both Sterling silver.

The only other differences in silver is in its purity percentage with 925 being the purest form for jewellery purpuses or if it's been single, double or triple plated.

If anything is sold using the term 'Silver tone' then you know it's paint or some other form of plating that has no real silver content in it.

Silver TONE won't tarnish but it won't last more than 5 seconds either, but all forms of real silver will tarnish unless they've been treated with an anti-oxident after plating.

Bit of useless info for ya there mate lol.

Plated silver is not Sterling silver plated, unless it's old Sheffield plate.

You can't electroplate with Sterling silver.

I think you may be a little confused, mooma.

That's why you can often tell the difference between electroplate and Sheffield plate

Continental and Russian standards aren't 925, either.

All I can say to that is that every time I see solid silver for sale anywhere they refer to it as being 925 (Meaning 92.5% pure) no matter what country it originates from.

I also tinkered around with a bit of silver plating myself a few years back and used a small lump of solid pure silver with the electrode attached to it and that worked just fine, but I'm not into it technically and only did it to see how it worked out in the first place, not to be serious about it.

If you say it's wrong I won't argue with you over it as I don't really care anyway.

Silver and Sterling Silver (925) are two different things . There's no such thing as 925 SS plated either although you can get a platinum layer over 925 SS which eventually wears off but the 925 SS still won't permanently tarnish . It can tarnish but should come up again when polished. ( toothpaste is the best)

Silver plated means just a silver colored product , there's no silver plating for jewellery.

AND just because it has a 925 stamp on it does NOT mean it is 925 SS. Those Beads for 'Pandora Style" bracelets etc stamped 925 are 99% fakes and yes they will tarnish.

Also skin releases body salts and chemicals that will react to Tibetan Silver , Silver and even 925 SS tarnishing the item . SS will come up as it should but it's almost impossible to polish up Tibetan Silver and European silver to new.

So it's highly possible OP that while you may have purchased items that are stamped that doesn't mean they are and that the buyer may be correct in saying they have tarnished.

I just received 3 bracelets with Pandora Style lamp-work beads that are stamped 925 , I know they aren't even just going by the price I paid , but also because I have seen such items being "Stamped" on the markets throughout Asia 🙂 These are my personal items but even if I resold them I wouldn't claim them to be 925 Beads even if so many sellers on ebay do.

Thank you arnl7178 for purchasing one of my bracelets!! 🙂

You're welcome. You have very pretty items!

As for how "real" the silver is. I don't care. I don't expect to pay minimal amounts of money for anything real or genuine, and those who do shouldn't shop on eBay.
