Not switching computer off

Is it ok to leave my laptop on all the time? I'm having major

problems with Start Up so am scared to log off.

So can a laptop stay on (in sleep mode and not connected

to the internet?)

I do it all the time, but still connected to the internet. Then when I hit the button I have to punch in a code (I'm not sure if that's what everyone does or obvious?)

I had the same problem once and did a system restore. All ok after that.

As suggested if you can restore back to an earlier point without losing anything important, that may work to rid of the problem.

Thanks for the advice.

Thing is a Windows Update caused it to crash (so the computer tells me)

and I did a restore to 3 days ago, and that didn't work, so yesterday I did a restore to 9 days

ago - but I don't know if it's worked as when I looked at my list of Win Updates that update

is still there, despite the restore.

So I'm scared if I log off then start up that update will still crash the machine.

What I would do...(though I'd think others here know more about computers)

Click start button.....go into 'all programs'.....then, windows update....click view update history

At the top of my page it says, 'to remove an update see 'installed update', (installed update is in blue...click it)'.

at that point it should list all your updates. I assume it's the last one? You should be able to remove it there.

I also noticed a troubleshoot update at that page, though I'd remove it and wait for it to do the update on it's own.

thanks a lot. I also used a Windows little programme called Fixit which I ran and it

told me that that update had been removed.

That Ehow looks a good site, I'll save it for future problems.

Off topic a little but once your computer is going, Win 7 and 8 allow you to Hibernate your laptop.

Laptops shouldn't be put into sleep because they use up power - sleep stores an image of memory on the hard drive and then powers down the computer. Then when you turn it back on it doesnt go through the whole shebang - it just restores the image; which is a lot faster.

Yes it is fine to leave on all the time, most of mine never get shut down for weeks. How ever i would recommend doing a reboot about every few weeks ( when you notice things slowing down ) as windows won't clear its cache files except on full shut down

This in its self is not a problem although you will suffer lag when trying to access some things. I have some daily use computers running windows 7 that have not been shut down for over 6 months and are fine, just be aware that leaving a laptop plugged in and on with the battery in will cause the battery to degrade faster as it is constantly charging and discharging, again not a problem if you never plan to use it for length on battery alone.

My only recommendation, apart from the "every now and then reboot" , would be to have the screen turn off after X minutes to save the screen

Thanks for that. Yes I've done all those things and rebooting every once in a while, and

it;s working fine.
