Greetings from Canada,

Two feet of snow outside, -15 C and my thoughts are of a much, much warmer place today.

Am planning a trip to Australia this coming year and I have accumulated $40 to $50 worth of Australian Coins over the past few years. My question is Has any of the Australian decimal coins been taken out of circulation?? Here in Canada we are just now about to do away with the 1 Cent coin. The coin will always be redeemed at the Banks but merchants will no longer accept them. I have a number of Australian 50 cent and 20 cent coins from the early 1980's as well as a number of $1 and $2 coins.

I was to England last year and had a number of their coins and some denominations had been changed (Size and thickness). I could not spend this older style, so was wondering if this might be the case in Australia as well.

Thanks for your time and effort.

Greetings from Sydney,

It is expected to reach +39 C today and most of us would prefer a bit of cool....but not that much 😉

Only copper coins have become obsolete like your 1 cent coin...all silver and golden coins are still valid. But have a quick look for any rare ones and have a great time spending your coins in Aus

Welcome to the board, readinglady10!

The only special coins are the Circular 50c coins which are worth about $6 each these days. The regular 12 sided ones are all still worth 50c, mostly, but check out completed listings to see what might have collectable value.

There's a rare $1 coin out there with the wrong strike on the front - I think the die should have been for a 10c piece. Basically it looks too small with a broader rim than normal. The back has a mob of kangaroos. There are millions of kangaroo coins out there, all perfectly normal, so your chances of having a special one are pretty small.

enjoy your trip!

Heychook, if you go to the coin, stamps, collectables&antiques board front page, look for the blue box that says New Topic. It is up towards the top left. Hope that helps.
