Reproduction Barsony Ladies H 19

The latest repros or fakes on the market are now selling on ebay as the real thing.

I went to an antique centre in Sydney last week and saw 4 of the same figures for sale in 4 shops and all were marked H-19. The sellers showed varying degrees of honesty in their descriptions but all were priced fairly in the range of $99 to 120. They all had silly necklaces which is obviously not original to Barsony ladies.

They are a much matter black than the real thing which has a shine to the surface and the bases are poorly finished with out a foot rim. So any real Barsony fan would know them in an instant as repro. But so many people want Barsony now that these will sell like hot cakes to the less experienced buyers.

This one was listed yesterday 290654904038 and another went on today for an even greater price and it is just not fair to those poor buyers.

So be on the look out for the next model that will be produced very soon I would think,

Hi Pip,

Great info I can see how poor the finish on the base is with little felt pads. I have seen over the last few weeks how they have shot up in price again but you do see ones that have been touched up professing to be in original condition. There was a big thing about the repro Atomics a few years ago and that would have caught just as many of the novices out as well. Ceramics are an easy taraget to knock off, very sad for the people who get duped. Comes back to homework though. Cheers Billy

I would have thought the H prefix was for Head and shouldn't appear on a full boddied piece?!

Hi Tim,

I know that Barsony did do brown and white ladies as well as lustre ware but the fact is you need to see the bases to be sure.

I think that H is for Head or bust type of figure but I think it is possible that a coplete figure could have that prefix. HL or FL are for head and figure lamps. I think these may be copies of the real thing but I am not a Barsony person myself. So I am not sure.

Just another thing to have to know as we wade our way through the rubbish to find the real gems 😉

there was a dealer in adelaide who collected these and the lamps 20+ yrs ago, he had one brown one i remember but it wasn't as glossy as the one on flicker (and the shade of brown looks wrong) the 'mosiac barsony girl' looks wrong as can be.

I'd love to be able to find the LAMP I remember that was on the table next to our cane settee when I was around 6 or 7 years old. :-x

It was just a head / bust & I'm pretty sure the lady had a yellow full head-scarf on and only one hand sorta draped across onto the opposite shoulder. I remember little star or asterix-shapes too ( perhaps on the scarf or maybe they were painted on around her wrist like a bracelet ?:| ) & I well remember being told not to keep picking at the little jewels in the centre of 'em. 😮

Would this have been a Barsony do you think??

Oh Pip - meant to add too that the buyer of that one item number you gave ( 290654904038 ) has bought a couple of items that were "listed as Barsony" in the past, but the bulk of their purchases

[ reading through their feedbacks 😉 coronet56 B-) ] seem to be Retro-ish things from around the era so perhaps they just wanted this & don't particularly care if it's original or not. IYKWIM 😉 They paid a hefty price though.

hi Pip and all, I was at an auction just before Christmas and they had a Barsony lamp also, very similar to the one with the link u had Pip, only difference the one at the auction had no markings whatsoever on the base, but it looked right, more than that one anyway.

A few years ago I was bidding on a brown lady lamp marked Barsony, but got [pardon the pun] pipped at the post, I gave up when the bidding was just over $100.00.and continued upwards. So they are around but scarcer than the black lady ones.

Thanks for the link LL as it is the bases that you need to see to have any chance of knowing what is real. They are all "well defined" unlike the new pieces. I see one that is flatter but has other indents which give strength to the pieces when being fired or they all have well defined foot rims which again is for strength.

The only black ladies that I have ever bought are two by Moss Ceramics which I love. They are the same head but both different lamps and are the same as the "angular head" that is not Barsony in that list. I have sent in the info.

Yes Jenny the brown ladies are much rarer but I have seen a couple over the years,

Hi these are the few Barsony lamps that I have they are pretty hard to get unless you want to pay big bucks and they are not that flash quality wise. The Head lamp has a flat base and is not footed like the other two but has H-40 inpressed in the back.The mexican dish in the Vintage Kitty blog is the one I sold. Cheers Billy

Amazing !! Only 5, but quality pieces and great variety. I love the simple one with the spear and shield.

When I started on Aus pots and Diana, in particular, Barsony would have been easy to collect. Where I used to shop I could have bought at least one a week and many variations. But they were not for me and Diana still rules supreme !!! B-)

Hi Pip, The Zulu maiden is the one that isn't Barsony I agree with form it is my favourite one. Soild plaster I think its American I always thought that for some reason. I remember one of the Sydney antique centres in Chippendale selling the Barsony lamps for about $180 each that was around 2001, I always thought about buying them but never got around to it they were all head versions. I also remember Towers Antiques in Newtown had a Brown Barsony figure lamp there for years which they couldn't seem to sell it was always in the window. Cheers Billy

Good memory on your part about Towers. Yes that was the place that I saw one of those brown ladies.

We used to shop out at Parramatta at Grandma Pickles and he used to have up to 3 at a time in the shop and usually from $90 to about $120 depending on the pose and paint quality. But he was great for cash discounts and probably sold them for heaps less if pressed.

My husband bought a head wall lamp thinking it was a Barsony but it turned out to be by Alex Takacs and he loves it.

The variety of black ladies is interesting and I think the Aussie ones hold their own in the world of such pieces,
