Does anyone recognise this back-stamp?

Hi, I was given this cup & saucer set but I have not been able to find this backstamp anywhere. Just wondering if anyone knows who the maker is. Replacements.com are unable to identify the pattern. The backstamp is only on the saucer and not the cup.The pattern looks like ?hollyhocks. thanks Sue

If OP can determine where the image on the plate and cup is from then yes as the symbol represents that place of interest.

Thanks for your help - It looks like an English scene with the hollyhocks & a bridge so I guess it could be anywhere!

The hollyhock is native to Asia and Europe so I'm just taking a stab in the dark and Germany comes to mind?

Instyle, It's Art Deco design. ie 1920', 1930's

Tell me how that relates to a computer symbol?

OP it could be the painter's mark and the pottery maker would be on other pieces in the set.

I've trawled through my Goddddard's book of china marks (twice) and can't find anything - sorry

Which obviuosly has nothing to do with the plate but that's what it also is.

My first answer to what it is place of interest sign is what it actually is, so if you can't find anything on it well that's your problem not mine.

This is a unicode symbol that's used in Excel and the image means Place of Interest so as it doesn't specifically show on the plate where it's from I then asked OP that perhaps if they knew something about the painting of the hollyhocks that may be useful in knowing where it's from.

Hollyhocks originated in Asia and Europe so knowing that Germany is one of the main origins of hollyhocks I then stated that perhaps that's where it's from, just a theory maybe wrong maybe right.

No need for you to come in totally throwing my thoughts on it out the window when I know what I'm saying is correct.

Thanks for all the information supplied and for looking in your guides for me. It gave me somewhere to start looking. I've also come across the 'angular bowens knot' which is a celtic symbol. The symbol on the back doesn't have rounded edges but is more square like. The set is very art deco in shape with it's triangular shaped handle and shaped saucer - Thanks Sue

As far as the symbol is concerned you probably are correct.

But this cup and saucer was manufactured in the 1920's/1930's which rules out anything connected to a computer symbol, doesn't it?

I used to have a B & M store selling antique/vintage china, so I think maybe you're out of your depth where this is concerned.

edited to say: Yes I have a problem when someone gives misinformation - which looks like you have a tendency to do.

Completely agree re date. As it has no wording giving country of manufacture (required under McKinley Act 1890) I would presume that it did not come from from any major ceramic company. The quality to me looks poor (from what I can see of the base of the saucer) so I would suggest Bavarian maybe even Japanese; the device may be supposed to resemble in some way the Sevres scrolls, though of course it is nothing like Sevres.

Misinformation I think not and out of my depth I think not.

It is in fact a command key symbol on a macintosh keyboard which of course doesn't have anything to do with the cup or plate but this is the same symbol.

The symbol is definately known as Place of Interest sign.

Ok how about you look up looped square in wikipedia and then come back here and tell me what you think?

But the pottery mark is the darn symbol and you know that I'm correct but you just can't admit it but it's ok I don't have any animosity towards you sometimes you can't always be right I'm not right all the time either but in this case I am.

My first statement was it's a Place of interest sign and also a computer command symbol and I said that the computer part had nothing to do with it but that it's out there.

Place of interest sign meaning to me that if OP can figure out what the hollyhocks were from then they could have an answer.

So hollyhocks originated in Europe so I took a guess as to maybe from Germany?

The flowers are the key here and the symbol is what it is so I'm trying to figure it out like the rest and I never come across like I'm a know it all and I haven't disrespected anything anyone has said on here, just trying to help and didn't know I'd get scalded for it.

I only looked at what was out there and that's what I found so I'll agree to disagree with you and leave it at that.

I'm sorry for trying to help someone find what they're looking for.

I'm done here also as it's not worth the hassle, well I was warned but I didn't listen.
