Hi, We recently got a message, claiming to be from ebay, which I strongly suspect is a scam by somebody who has managed to get into our ebay site. This message claimed that we had to update my bank details. As Ebay already has our bank details and has had them for many years, I naturally thought it very suspicious. Another cause for my alarm is that, the message threatened us with not passing on any money due to us if we did not immediately pass on our bank details. Tonight I got another message telling me that I would not be paid for recent sales we had. I clicked on the message and saw they showed the details of our account showing only the last four numbers as is the norm so I followed the prompts. However when I got the phonecall verifying everything. The person at the end of the line told if the information was correct press ...... (not decipherable) I now believe this was a hoax and have withdrawn monies from the account. Can somebody please let me know if this is indeed a low life hacker or not.

You don't appear to have sold much for a long time.

Have you registered for Managed Payments, something that has been a requirement for sellers for over 4 years?

If not, do so, as you will not have any funds remitted to you until you do.

If so, have you been getting funds remitted? If yes, ignore. If not, contact eBay.

Over the last couple of months have had sales. We had a 9 items sold last weekend. Threat of non-payment (supposedly from ebay) unless we confirm bank details first appeared two days ago. Has anyone else had to confirm bank details?

We have only just began to sell on ebay again, we ceased selling on ebay when they made things so complicated. I know of several other people who did likewise.

OP, have you actually registered for Managed Payments? If you don’t, your funds will not be disbursed to you.

Selling on eBay has changed dramatically over the last 4-5 years.

You are required to have both your bank account and your ID verified on eBay in order to be paid through the Managed Payments system.

Bear in mind you’ll be classed as a new seller if you haven’t sold both recently and regularly. Your funds will be held until your selling activity reaches a certain level and regularity.

Only you know if you fully completed sign up to Managed Payments and have been verified to sell

Not what you used to sell years ago

If you think it is a hoax, why would you click on any links?

How are you intending to pay the fees you owe for the items sold?

And if the items have been paid for, I hope you have sent them to the buyers

Where we’re the messages?

only to your email address, or where they in your eBay’s messages?

Have you actually contacted eBay, directly, not through the link you think is a hoax?

The best way is to never click on a link in an email, thats for any email from any business not just Ebay. Always log into your accounts, and check anything that way rather than a link supplied.

If you think its a hoax, why would you click on it, you are playing into their business model. I get daily emails from many ''business's'', wanting me to click on a link, just don't do it.

My favourite is I seem to be getting tax refunds on at least a weekly basis, I could have retired by now if I clicked on all those links. Just think of the money I am leaving behind.

To answer your questions, Why did I click on the link - When the warning (actally a threat) was still there I thought that I should check it out. The information shown was legitimate and I thought that my fears of a hoax was unfounded. But after receiving the phone call with the undecipherable instruction I feel my first fears were legitimate. Of course the items have been sent and paid for. We care about our customers. If you are a seller, you would know that ebay take their fees out before paying out the seller. The message was in red on the 'My Ebay' page plus in an email. Have I contacted Ebay directly to ask them if the message was legitimate. Where the hell do I find the means to contact them direct. The only place I could find to make any contact put me onto a b......y computer which could not work out what I was asking. This was the main reason why we had not sold on ebay for a few years. Ebay seemed to have no interest in looking after their good sellers. Sure the customers are very very important. But Ebay also needs to remember no sellers - no custimers. Tell me how do I talk to a human on ebay.

Sorry if I sound angry, I am very annoyed about there being no means to get help on ebay matters. If there is a means it is not very obvious. I feel Ebay don't care about their sellers.

Go to the "eBay help" button at the top of the page and then go to the "account" link on there.

That will put you on your account help, scroll to the bottom for the "chat with us" option then ask for a supervisor as soon as you can.

The option to "Contact Us" is also shown in both of the safety check links I provided.

Ask to speak to a supervisor.
