Question Re: Australia Post - Maximum Girth for Domestic Parcels? in Packaging & Shipping

I guess the operative term here is 'Discretionary Carriage' meaning that it is subject to their opinion whether to accept the parcel. Strangely enough, the references I linked to never mentioned a max girth for domestic parcels - stating only applies international products. Their postage calculator should automatically detect when a parcel exceeds 140 cm in girth - especially when you enter all the dimensions.

Australia Post - Maximum Girth for Domestic Parcels?

Today Australia Post wanted to refuse my domestic parcel (same state) because it was too large based on 'girth' (?!)

I carefully measured the weight and dimensions according to the Australia Post Shipping Calculator. According to the calculator, the box was perfectly fine as it did not exceed the max length of 105cm. Dimensions: 60x41x53 (cm). Weight: 6.1kg. The packages volume was 0.13m3 (the maximum allowed is 0.25m3).

according to the shipping calculator, the size and weight was perfectly. No mention of girth.

according to the Size Guide on the website (https://auspost.com.au/business/shipping/check-sending-guidelines/size-weight-guidelines) the 140cm girth limit only applies to International Parcels - not domestics parcels!

In the Domestic Parcels Guide (https://auspost.com.au/content/dam/auspost_corp/media/documents/domestic-parcels-guide.pdf), there is no reference to a 'girth' in the entire document. Size limits are listed on page 6 (P1.2.1/P1.2.2/P1.2.3) of the document. Only citing max length and volume

After making my point the reluctantly accepted my parcel but said that most likely, they won't deliver it and will return it to me... My point is that there is not max. girth limit for domestic parcels, based on Australia Post's info that is publicly available. Did anyone else encounter this problem?

Have a look at the Australia Post terms and conditions. Specifically 29.1.1, where they say that a girth greater than of 140cm, which your parcel is, is prohibited.

I realise that AP's website is not particularly user friendly, but the search option actually works. It took me 90 seconds to find this information.

So your point is incorrect. There IS a maximum girth for parcels.

29 Articles which have irregular dimensions or which are overweight
29.1 Australia Post may refuse, in its absolute discretion, to carry an article if in the
reasonable opinion of Australia Post the article weighs more than 22 kilograms; or if
it is a parcel:
29.1.1 the parcel either exceeds 105 centimetres in length or the girth exceeds 140
centimetres;
