Hello all,

I have recently sent 3 items using ebay postage labels, where the items were to large for satchels.

I would like to get a rough idea of the postage cost of a few other items, before I list them.

I don’t want to pack them first, because often buyers want to add additional small items for combined postage.

I am wondering if there is a way to do this, I have been trying with no luck so far.

I would be grateful if anyone could help please.

Measure the item and ad 5cm to each side to allow for bubble wrap... eg. actual item size 22cm x 18cm x 12cm... shipping size 27cm x 23cm x 17cm

When calculating weight, use actual weight of item plus reasonable weight of packaging. For example, if I'm shipping a DVD player that weighs 2.2kg, I'll estimate shipping weight as 3kg.

Always over-estimate. You can always refund an overcharged amount, but you can NEVER ask for more to cover shortfall due to an undercharged amount

I have various size boxes on hand. Before I list anything, I decide which box I will use for the item, leaving plenty of room for packing. I then weigh the item and box (without packing) and estimate what weight the final packed item will be. For example, "under 500 grams" or "between 500 grams to 1 kilo" or over 1 kilo. Australia post website will give you the prices for all of these if you enter the size and weight of the box. They travel anywhere in Australia for the same cost. Estimating the weight of the packing material is a little trickier and comes will experience. Also depends what you use. Packing peanuts and airbags are the lightest, I have both on hand. Mostly I use bubble wrap around the actual item and then scrunched up magazines to fill the box. I like to keep the final weight well clear (10-20 grams) less than that allowed, and make sure to measure the box larger by 1cm each way if the measurement could be disputed by someone with a different tape measure. I have a set of weights and periodically check my scales are accurate. Generally speaking, if my item is more than 450 grams just for the box and the item without packing, I would quote for a 1 kg postage cost. In this case, I try to pack with peanuts or air bags and if I can pack at no more than 490 grams, I would refund the buyer the difference. If is weighs 400 grams without packing, I can always manage to pack under the 500 grams weight. With larger items, 900 grams for item and box, should be able to be packed at under 1 Kg, it is a bit of trial and error, you may have to pack a few prematurely to find out, it depends on the weight of the box, how well you pack and what type of packing material you use. I hope this helps.
