Do purchases from overseas/china which cost more than AUD$1000 always attract GST or duties?

If I buy items from overseas/china which cost more than AUD$1000 will I be charged GST or import duties? The site claims the item will be delivered to my door as per any ordinary postal delivery and no mention is made of any further costs. The 'cheaper' price from China (as compared to Australian prices) would evaporate if various duties/GST etc were to be added. The item may even become MORE expensive. So, has anyone had actual experience with a purchase like this? And can you advise on what happens?

Once the value of an item exceeeds AU$1000 you will be charged import duties and GST on the value of the item as well as the postage cost.

From experience the charges are between 25% and 40% of the cost of the item plus postage, depending on what rate is applicable to the particular item.

When the item arrives in Australia you will get an invoice from Australian Customs with the amount to be paid....you can usually pay this over the phone by credit card and the item will be forwarded on to you.

Like the other posters I can only issue a warning to be very wary of buying expensive items from any of the Asian countries.
