Soap Stone Carvings

I know nothing about these apart from they belonged to

my Brother who travelled through China about 30-40 yrs ago.

If anyone can help with a asking price for the lot.

TIA.

Freddie there's no indication of size.  Do any of them have Chinese characters

carved into the base?   If so, that would make them chop seals.

The man on the right is the Chinese God of Longevity - Fook Lu Shou -  symbolised by

the peach in his hand.

The ones next to him are Chinese Lions or Dogs of Fo.  The male has his paw on a ball and the female has her paw on a cub.

I can't really discern what the others are.  I know this prob doesn't help with pricing, but gives you somewhere to search.

I'm sure someone else with more knowledge will come along in the meantime.

It may be older and/or more detailed than yours though Freddie.

You also seem to have only the male dog/lion.  They're usually in pairs.

Hi stawky thanks for your reply.

The 2 that look like bookends have my brothers name

on the bottom of one - but to read that you need to put

it up to the mirror. The other has chinese writing on the bottom

They are 13cm

The peach in the hand man is on a carved base no writing he's

20cm

The 2 horses has chinese writing in white and my brothers name

carved underneath 7cm

3rd from left is like a mountain with a temple on the top - it has

red chinese writing on the bottom front. 13cm

The chinese lions or dogs of Fo - the square one has a ball inside

the big ball and they are both 15cm.

The ones with your brother's name on the bottom are def chop seals, then.

(These are used to sign papers etc)

Might affect the price - don't know

The ball carved inside the other ball has more value.

I hope you can track down a price.   I'd hate for you to sell them too cheaply.

Freddie, are you sure they are soap stone?   At least a couple of them look like they could be jade, albeit a fairly low quality jade.

If they are they would be worth more than soap stone.
