So we can all really know where Tony and Co, who love all things American, got their vision for the future of internet in Australia.
In the US like here, internet services are provided by private companies.
In the US like here, most rural communities are significantly disadvantaged because these said same telecom companies refuse to provide a high speed service to those rural communities because it’s simply would not generate sufficient profit. In effect, they, like rural communities her,e are expected to pay a premium price for a substandard service.
So these communities got together and created Community Networks which actually run at a small profit.
Now the very same telecom companies who refuse to provide the service in the first place are now lobbying Congress to make Community Internet Networks illegal.

Do you live in a rural community?

Yes I do.
Though we are only 60 or so kilometres from Adelaide, the only internet service we can get is wireless, which for 8 gigs and phone calls costs $120+ per month, whereas before we moved, we had an ADSL connection and the same product being provided by same provider was costing us less than half that amount. In fact if you look at the current plans of offer, if you have ADSL access, $120 will buy you a plan with all the bells and whistles - unlimited data, unlimited local and STD calls etc.
Now I’ve called my local member to find out when we can expect something better. Of course only spoke to a staffer. The response, maybe sometime before December but they wouldn’t commit to a year. They thought it was funny. Couldn’t understand why I didn’t.

We are having nbn connected next week. I am wondering if I need to buy a different phone. This is what the blurb says I need to have when the tech guy comes.
A telephone handset connected to UNI-V port 1 on your NBN Connection Box.
I don't want to have to run out and buy a new phone before the tech can finish installing. The router is being delivered today, so that is sorted.
Not tech. literate at all, so need a bit of info from someone who knows what they are doing. lol.

The first thing to do would be look at the various providers and see what's on offer before just signing up with Telstra for the long haul.
With the NBN it's so much cheaper to use voip if it suits your needs. Most of the providers will have a phone to sell you if yours is not suitable. If you're using the Uni-V port it shouldn't matter which phone you use. Not all phones are suitable for voip but the Uni-V is set up to match standard phones.

Scott Ludlam is asking the hard questions again at the moment in the Senate Committee. .
They take most questions on notice. Some of the answers to those questions on notice are pathetic.

Thanks Gleee. It sounds like we are ok with what we have then. Not going with telstra by the way. DD is, and it has been months and still no connection. We already had TPG adsl and had no problems at all. Only applied last week and all being well should be connected on monday. Good plan too.

Katy, if you don't use Telstra message bank be sure to tell them you don't want it connected because they do this without your knowledge by saying it's part of your plan.
