AMERICAN sport sites were in awe of Fanning and the very “Australian” way in which he handled the frightening situation.
“Fanning was not injured at all, and was cool enough to give us the most Australian quote possible,” wrote SBNation’s Tom Ziller, referring to Fanning’s statement: “I punched him in the back.”
Fansided.com was full of praise for Fanning, describing him as a “badass”.
“One thing is certain from this whole attack — Mick Fanning just became the world’s biggest badass for fighting a shark live on television and winning without suffering injury.”
JULIAN WILSON (OTHER SURFER IN THE WATER)
AUSTRALIAN surfer Julian Wilson is being hailed a courageous legend for paddling towards the great white shark while it was attacking Fanning.
Instead of heading for shore, Wilson paddled towards the shark to try and help his friend but was anxious he couldn’t get to him quick enough.
“It came up and he was wrestling it, and I saw he got knocked off his board,” an emotional Wilson said through tears afterwards.
“I was like, ‘I’ve got a board, if I can get there I can stab it or whatever, I’ve got a weapon.’”

OMG that was a mighty big fin came rearing out of the water next to him. Good on him for having the presence of mind to puch the shark off.
