Stay safe all who reside in the areas affected by the fires.

A number of properties in Victoria have been lost as the state battles through its most severe fire threat since Black Saturday in 2009.

Officials say they have major concerns for areas in Melbourne's outskirts including Craigieburn, Warrandyte and Gisborne where the fast-moving fires are in built-up areas.

Emergency warnings are in place for areas including East Gippsland and the La Trobe Valley.

Temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius in some regions, with a gusty wind change moving across the state during the day.

Meanwhile in South Australia, a large blaze continues to burn out of control at Bangor in the Southern Flinders Ranges where an emergency warning remains in place.

At least 20 homes have been destroyed by bushfires in Victoria, with crews battling dozens of fires raging across the state.

Around 6,000 firefighters have been mobilised and 25 fires are burning out of control as the state deals with the worst fire situation since Black Saturday.

Cooler conditions overnight have helped crews, but emergency warnings remain in place for the Mickleham Road fire on Melbourne's northern fringe.

It has now spread across 40 kilometres, taking in areas including Kilmore and Wallan.

Authorities are also concerned about a fire burning in the Hazelwood open cut coal mine at Morwell in the Latrobe Valley, and other blazes in East Gippsland.

The threat elsewhere has been downgraded, but residents are urged to remain on alert.

The fire threat has also eased in South Australia's Flinders Rangers, with the Bangor fire no longer threatening homes.

Have been in Warrandyte for 40 years and this is the closest and only the 2nd time we have had to get out both in the last month

Three houses lost and the fire about 800 mtrs from us so got the bleep out of there before the warning came through

Pretty scary but returned to find everything still in one peice thankfully and would not think of living anywhere else

It is where we choose to live and these are the risks one lives with if you choose to live in a bush setting

However we are to old to stay and try to fight the fire and would not have done so even if we were caperble of doing so as it is not worth your life for a few things that you value and you can mostly replace

Feel for the people who have lost there homes etc however no lives were lost here thankfully so a good outcome with that..

Glad you're okay and that your house is, too. Warrandyte is such a pretty area and I can understand why you wouldn't live anywhere else. I have family in Kinglake West. It is a very unsettling time for them. Stay safe.
