Personally I think cloud storage is the way of the future. Free cloud storage is not hitting anyones 'hip pocket'. For businesses who pay, why not.. their records are safe..from fire and theft as well.
Another advantage with cloud storage is for things like accounting software programs where the business owner, their bookeeper, their accountant can all access the details from where ever they are located. Book-keeper can work from home.
Portable hard drives don't last forever, they can fail. They are certainly better than not backing up docs and photos at all.

Makes me wonder why some even signed up and paid monthly fees for dial-up or broadband if they are concerned about paying for a service.

Yes, and in the case of a flood or fire the external/portable drive is likely to be damaged the same as the original.
If the cloud is such a bad concept you would not expect most of the financial, educational, insurance, health etc institutions to use it.

A friend of my daughter's house got burgled, the theives took the portable hard drives as well as other electronic stuff.
It is a wonder some are even on the internet and not still sitting around using a manual typewriter or maybe a telex machine.

I fully advocate and in deed recomend that everyone has an off site full backup. But not in cyberspace.
In many cases a persons full system and data exceeds 70 Gb. (in my case it is around 1.4 Tb) Even if by entire system say destroyed I could be fully operational in around 2 hours.
By the way I dont even have to take time to do a back up as such, system, applications or data. ๐

Umm what to you think the cloud store the data on? and yes HDDs do fail as sure as eggs.

Cloud storage also has the advantage of being abled to be accessed from anywhere in the world that has internet access. You don't need to physically carry around your laptop.
You can also choose to allow other persons to access your data or photos.
It is an option for data storage.

Being in the cloud other persons may be able to access your data even if you choose it to be private ๐
