Finally found a fish n chip restaurant still open after all the tourists had nicked off for the day, at the Harbour View Fish Cafe.
The manager, chief cook and bottlewasher, Robert. I promised him I'd advertise the cafe when I got back home, and I've just "liked" them on FB and "followed" them on Twitter.
