I suspect this will probably turn out to be a false alarm, but if not, it opens a very big can of worms..

So by the time a report was made it was third hand news and a month old.
Okay, so it's as up to date and accurate as anything we might read on the internet.

why not wait and see?
and where else do you read news
these days if not on the internet.
Despite the location of the wreckage being far from the current official search area as well as Reunion Island, where the flaperon of the missing airliner washed ashore, the Malaysian government is taking it seriously and has directed itโs Civil Aviation department and the Ministryโs Air Accident Investigation Division to look into the matter, Channel News Asia reported.
Malaysiaโs police are also investigating the claims and have asked police in the Philippines to verify the claims.
โThe residents on the island hunt birds for food and build their houses on the water. They donโt watch television and as such they have no knowledge of the outside world,โ Mr Omar told Astro Awani.

From my OP: I suspect this will probably turn out to be a false alarm, but if not, it opens a very big can of worms.
I hardly think that qualifies as a theory.

more from the internet:
Speaking to the Bernama news agency, Philippine police chief Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said there was unlikely to be any truth to the claims. "Not really..." he said. "Philippines confirm there is no wreckage of the plane."
Malaysian police are yet to rule out the report, and said it would be unusual for a hoax caller to provide both his own and the aunt's full name and details.
โIf we are to check [thoroughly], it has to be a deliberate effort. Itโs a big island, 3.5 miles longโฆ but we did an initial investigation with the populace,โ Bacordo said.

It's a jungle out there.
Where skeletal stories are told around the campfire or the watercooler.
And how when muscled up, is offered to a flagging-in-interest event.
Not just reporting news, the media are "making news".
