I want to buy a good cutlery set, what would constitute a good set to you?

i am no help what so ever but one with knives, forks and spoons are a good starting point.

just had a quick look on google and i remembered right.

 

my parents bought a steinbach set and it's very nice.

 

probably the same quality as WMF but cheaper because you don't pay for the name.

Good quality - $200-400

Ok quality - $100-200

 

Anything under is going be rough.

 

What I look for:

  • Must be stainless steel
  • Made from one single piece of metal
  • Run your fingers around the rim of the spoon - no sharpness. Should be polished smooth.
  • There has to be some weight in the handle.
  • Handle of knife should feel instinctive when holdng it in the cuttin position - some move around so you have to grip them.
  • They should not bend or even flex when you give them a nudge to try. Particularly at the neck or the fork prongs.
  • Knives should be slightly serrated.
  • Forks can't be sharp (stick them in your mouth and see).

Apart from that, think about any difficulty in cleaning the cutlery when you look at it.  It's a bug.er of a job when there are patterns and grooves.

I have never owned a good set of cutlery, so I have no idea of brands or what to look for, I notice on ebay they vary in price so am unsure of quality for the $$

I think more improtant than brands etc is how comfortable it feels in your hand.  For that reason that is one thing I would never buy online.  I had one set that looked really nice and was quite expensive but it was weighted all wrong and I hated using it.  Gave it away when we moved.

 

I also think you can never have too many serving spoons etc in a good complete set.

With that I agree.  Mine has heavyish round handles.  I should watch ebay for spares as a few have lost their screws. I got a new set at DFO that loks the same but is not quite the same quality.  Daughter got a set a DFO that she is happy with.
