OK folks, I need advice. the Elephants are looking for a new car. Our little shopping trolley (Suzuki Swift) has served us faithfully for 21 years and has nearly 300,000 ks on the clock, but it is now fast approaching retirement. We want something small, nippy and cheap to run - a car that will only be used around town as we have a Lancer for longer runs.
Options we are looking at are Mitsubishi Mirage, Suzuki Alto, Volkswagon Up! Nissan Micra, or Mazda 2.
Which one would you recommend and why?
Or would you suggest something other than any of these. (I would dearly love a smart for 2 but Mr Elephant says no and anyway they are a bit outside of our budget.)

Well, it looks like it's going to be the Alto. We went and looked at one today. $13,000 for an automatic at our local dealer's and he'll throw in a sat nav. I still want to try out the Mirage and the Micra, but I think Mr Elephant has pretty much made his mind up and since he does most of the driving i guess it's his call.
We don't want to buy until the start of the next financial year as I can claim it on my tax, and when we do we'll probably go through private fleet, same as we did with our Mitsi. Also we can't bear to part with the old car till we see that magical 300,000 k come up on the clock.

Woops posted this on the wrong thread
If you bought a second hand or new VW that corresponds to the date ranges then yopu are entitled to this recall............
Do not let the dealers fob you off
The woman that was hit and killed by the truck in Victoria due to the intermittant drive failure is only the tip of the iceberg re accidents caused by the oe failure.
The fact that VW recalled the European delivered cars with faulty geraboxes opver 12 months ago while not addressing the problem in other markets (including Aus) that had the same gearbox fitted is reprehensible imo .. and I can smell a class action in the air...

CANBERRA (Reuters) -- Volkswagen has written to car owners in Australia offering free inspections of VW vehicles in response to growing worries about potential gearbox problems that have already triggered recalls in China and Japan.
Australia's government is investigating reports of power loss problems with cars manufactured by Volkswagen amid an inquiry into the death of a woman killed when her Volkswagen Golf was hit by a truck in 2011.
The Victoria state coroner is due to report in July.
Australian newspapers have reported being contacted by hundreds of local car owners who have experienced problems with their Volkswagen vehicles.

I bought an Alto too ๐
You better check whether that sat nav will be available after the end of June, I think the offer ends on the 30th.

Thanks Punch - happy driving.:-)
The sat nav isn't terribly important as it isn't built in and we already have a TomTom. We can't buy before next month as it needs to be offset against my next year's taxation. Our local dealer currently has one for $13,000 - which is probably as a good a deal as we'd get through private fleet - so we may get that if it hasn't been sold in the meantime. the only thing against it is it's a boring old white and I'd rather set my heart on blue.

Well, we've taken the plunge - a shiny blue Suzuki Alto We did a deal whereby we signed the papers today but don't have to pay for it till next week. That way we get the freebies attached to the 'end of year sale' but it can still come of my next year's tax. We didn't even have to put down a deposit.

.
And today we bade a sad farewell to our old Swift. It had been a trusty steed for 21 years and clocked up 300,000 ks last week. (despite the shiny new Alto Mr Elephant has been using it for short runs.)
We had planned to keep it until it ran out of rego, then take it to the wreckers., but instead it's gone to finish it's life in luxury - housed in a prope rlock up garage, no less, with a friend of no 4 son who does FIFO and wants a cheappie just to run around in when he is home.

I hope my Swift lasts that long She_el! That is a pretty good innings.
