Pension erosion: 100 years of pension reform out the window
WHAT would you say if you woke up tomorrow to news that your pension was going to drop by $100 per week?
You’d probably be pretty outraged.
But if the Budget proposal regarding pension indexation comes into play, the pension’s value will drop by about $100 per week in just ten years.
The removal of wage indexation effectively represents the biggest cut to pensions since the introduction of the Age Pension in 1908.

Budget backlash
VICTORIAN and Queensland seniors have led the way in a wave of grassroots protest against federal and state budget measures that are set to reduce the value of pensions and increase healthcare costs, while cutting funding for pensioners’ and seniors’ concessions.
At the same time, seniors advocacy groups continue to lobby the government for change and doctors have pledged to fight hard for a reversal of health reforms.
Fair Go for Pensioners Coalition spokesman Lew Wheeler said seniors were well represented in a rally of about 2000 people that marched on Federation Square in May to oppose the budget measures. “The momentum continues to build to have these vicious proposed policy changes overturned,” he said.
