Why is a thread locked?? if a thread has violated CS policy, is not suitable to be commented on, but is still visible for all to read then what is the purpose of locking a thread?
This post is not discussing any thread in particular but is just a question that really needs to be addressed, why? because:
I'm sure there are many more arguments against this practice.

In response to your question about why is a thread locked and not just removed, a thread is locked and left on the board for a period of time to ensure that users who may have been posting in the thread get the chance to see it has been locked.
This is done rather then just removing a thread straight away to avoid confusing to Users as to why the thread has disappeared.

My understanding is that once the discussion gets off topic, the thread gets locked instead of removed so the relevant information can still be accessed.

This post is not discussing any thread in particular but is just a question that really needs to be addressed, why? because:
- locking a thread shuts down debate
- Locking a thread limits a free range of topics that could be discussed
- Locking a thread is a presumption that posters are infantile & can't control themselves.
I'm sure there are many more arguments against this practice.
we have known for many years that the mods are told to treat us like toddlers who by some weird incident have the ability to read and write at a premature age, so what?

C&p cs policy which we all know is not what my thread topic is about.
I put 3 points up, comment on them & if you have any more reasons as to why it is nonsensical to lock a thread & then leave it visible if it is offensive or violates CS policy which rather defeats the policy of locking a thread in the 1st place.

What if the whole thread does not violate the policy? what if the 'offensive' content is removed? Why shouldn't the rest stay? - is my question.

locked is a consolation prize that appears somehow less severe than mass slapping or removal, but is the same thing. its a gag order.

Why does it even matter if a thread is locked? I don't care at all if threads are locked, removed or half of the posts deleted.

So you don't care about the topic of this thread at all? then what on earth is the point of your posting here.
