I like Masterchef better than the other cooking comps.
Great way to start this season rather than the mass single tasks they used to do.
Now every hopeful contestant gets 1 hour to cook a dish tasted by the 3 judges.
With second chance contestants cooking for a blind tasting.
24 contestants get an apron.

Another thing they've done on Masterchef is ask the contestants to recreate a family favourite dish.
The results just crack me up. They are rarely like anything that 'mother/grandmother/father used to make.
Certainly not after the contestants have changed a key ingredient, added stuff that never appeared in the original, deconstructed it to piles of mystery bits on the plate or 'made some improvements'. The results are even more hilarious if the judges hate it. Perhaps they should have stuck with the original recipe after all. 🙂

I had a fit the first time I saw what a deconstructed pie was. It sort of looked like what is left on a plate after someone has eaten most of the dish. A scattering of crumbs etc
Then they pipe a tiny bit of this and that around.
Or smear a bit of potato mash across the bottom of the plate.
That is not how it is done, my mum knew how to serve mash. She had an industrial ice cream server and it was one scoop or two. None of this quinelling with icecream either. One scoop or two.
I love the family faves too. Nothing like we had at home, that is for sure.

When I had the grandkids living with me, using an ice cream scoop for mashed spuds
was the only way to stop arguments about who got more.
But then, I used it for my daughter when she was a kid as well.
I'm recording, but haven't caught up just yet.
I hope to catch up on the weekend.

Ah yes....the dinky little oval scrap of melting ice cream.....artistically shaped and gone in a mouthfull. Absurd.

Last night I was busily changing from MC to Eurovision.
Nice songs and nice dishes.
So they have changed the format a little.
I like the young 19 yo Jess and nonna Gina. They can both cook.
Already we are seeing some failed dishes which shows the amateur side to some of these contestants.
And that's terrific as others get around to support n lift.
I have missed the cosiness of this show.

Yes, I agree, Kopes.
Seems they may have gone back to some basic cooking, for some.
I like Jess too, and nonna Gina, but also Aldo. I really like Aldo.
Haven't caught up on the mystery box challenge just yet.

Nigella week. I like her style.
Well, 4 contestants have gone home and tonight was 2 teams taking over 2 cafe's on the Yarra in Abbotsford, Melbourne.
Unfortunately young Brendan injures himself badly but the red team continue one man down.
Great dishes put up for all the diners at brunch and I thought both teams were the winners.
Liked the look of the salad and smoked salmon in a brioche.
Thought someone would have done a smashed avo with lime juice or something with a poached egg all on some nice bread. (perhaps ciabatta)
I'm guessing Brendan makes it back to continue in the next episode.

Yes, been a good week with Nigella. She's looking trim and terrific too.
I haven't caught up with tonight's show just yet.
I'm glad someone has won an immunity pin already.
I'm worried Loki and Sashi can only cook their own cultural dishes and nothing else.
Maybe Hoda as well. I did like her pulled candy. Amazing to watch.
Chloe is looking good at this point, but Aldo and Nonna Gina have been very quiet.
All in the editing, I guess.

A little sad to see Michelle go, I think she is a better cook than others still there.
From 24 now down to 18 contestants.
Gordon Ramsey week.
When he first came to television I didn't like him but I have new respect for the way he helps people.
And boy, it looks like he is going to get tough with our gentle Masterchef contestants.
Immunity pins given out so it's becoming interesting.
A good show tomorrow tonight by the looks of it.
