my car VZ Commodore has started with a click-click-click when I try to start it.... it does it 2 or 3 times ... eventually starts after I bless it a few times .... but I'm worried that eventually it won't ..... so, starter motor? solenoid?
This had to happen when every mechanic for miles around is on 2-weeks holiday.

If its an auto-make sure the gear stick is firm in Park.
or try starting in Neutral.---geez im getting a headache
Have you checked out the-key or keys like i posted last night-clean the metal ring
arould the key hole and the nob on the module--the key needs to make
electrical contact wnen pushed in and turned...........................Richo.
Yes, it's an auto. Yes, I have tried it in Park, Neutral. I have taken it out of Park into drive and put it back into Park - done all those things.
Yes, checked the keys, and tried the spare. Turned the key upside down. Cleaned the contact points on both keys and keyhole. Make sure I push it right in and make contact. It still does the same thing - ie start sometimes and not others.
I have tried to look down where the cable meets the starter but can't get my hands in to check if it's tight. Doesn't appear to be any corrosion around where the cable joins the starter. Check the cables down to the alternator - they look OK - ie no corrosion or black - and they look tight.

This one is out of left field but I've seen it work,(turn the ignition on but don't start it until the seatbelt light
has gone off).
It had something to do with the computer needing to "catch up",( that's how the auto elec explained it to this
guy),
If it's a quick trrrrr, trrrrrr, trrrrr I would go with the faulty Alternator as my OH just had hers replaced in her VX due
to the similar sound,(once I recharged the battery it started fine but the Altenator was faulty).
I used to carry a screwdriver to cross on the starter motor,(these days those sort of "fixes" would possibly blow
the computer systems in the newer cars).

I can't understand how a faulty key will cause a click, click, click under the hood.........Maybe the OP has a tail light out, that's sure to cause a click under the hood......
Oh, stawka...........didn't, didn't, didn't...............na-na-nana-na........... I just suggested a re-reading of the OP.

Most commodores have a proximity ring around the ign barrel with a transponder in the key as a security feature. When lots of weight is added to the key fob ie
gollliwogs, baubles, other keys and the like the weight of the excess and inertia causes the barrell to wear.
It is a common fault sometimes causes a click sometimes causes a slow wind sometimes causes a delayed wind.
Tail lights you say! google VZ blinker stuck on BCM fault....almost as common as the starter motor fault.... In fact the faulty BCM stuck on
indicator scenario is often the start of the end to what was once a good battery
FYI the commodore ecotec is based on a buick 3.8 engine. The yank cast iron Buick v6 was used in Commodores up until VP.
GM australia AKA as Holden then redesigned the buick with an alloy block to better suit new emission laws and Oz conditions

Don't pay $650 - $900 for a new BCM and new / reprogrammed keys from Holden dealer when you only need to spend a fraction of the
cost!
The faulty, sticking relay needs to be de-soldered from a double-sided printed circuit board inside the BCM and this new relay needs to
be soldered in its place.
