What is it?

Say I come here and i am asian.

I can speak my language at home to my family, I can cook the food i like at home (or anywhere) I can do my rituals to my gods, no one will care.

So what is that multiculturalism all about?

it seems like empth words to me.

i don't understand.

i come from a different culture, english is my 2nd language.

i cook my countries food at home and hubby puts up with it or i cook him something else if it's too much of an aquired taste.

i speak english (foreign) to other people in the shops because no-one would understand a word if i spoke in my native tongue.

so what exactly is multiculturalism?

is it some ideal where i could talk in my native tongue here and expevt other people to understand me?

is it the freedom to cook my "foreign" meals as i please?

can someone please enlighten me what it actually means?

I can say what I know to be the truth.................... you didn't live there, I did.

Now, for the other thing..................... I have an ID for a purpose, unless you want to make an even playing field and put your name on here?

This is the area I live near.

Wollongong has a distinctly multicultural population. Many migrants were attracted to the area by the job opportunities at the Port Kembla steelworks in the post-war period, and settled in surrounding suburbs such as Cringila, Warrawong and Coniston.

By 1966 about 60% of the wage earners at the Australian Iron and Steel steelworks were born overseas coming from over 70 countries.

These included British, Macedonians, Portuguese, Greeks, Bosnians, Croatians, Serbians, Germans, Turks, and Chileans. With the end of the White Australia policy these were followed by Indo-Chinese refugees in the 1970s, Indians, Filipinos, Chinese, Malays and Pacific Islanders in the 1980s and 1990s.

What area of Australia did that happen (or allegedly happen) in?

Greek people settled in different parts of Australia. I have never heard any stories like that about Greek people in the area I live in.

(scroller alert. something to think about before bed-time, peoples.)

Social stability depends on, to a large part,  all members of that society holding the same ethical and moral values.

Those values are formalised and expressed in the law of the land. The Law, which is a reflection of the values which the society holds to be precious and desirable and even essential, so that everyone in a said society can be depended upon to hold the same or similar values such that their behaviour is predictably reliable.

There will always be deviants; those who deviate from the commonly held values, but they are always in the minority (there is a social theory of deviance which explains this).

These commonly held values are the very glue which holds a society together, where everyone in the said society can be depended upon to behave essentially in the same way.

There will always be deviants; those whose behaviour or whose ideas  or beliefs deviate from the common ; from the majority.

This happens in every society. I'm not talking about tastes in food or customary dress fashions or ways of decorating one's house or even one's car. I'm talking about how we treat each other.

We say we are a multicultural society. We have people from many and diverse cultures who live here and they bring a vibrancy and a richness which enahnces our collective experience of life.

Usually.

I think we need to be careful though,  to not extend our tolerance and acceptance to those who appeal to their cultural difference to excuse attitudes and actions (behaviours) which are so deviant as to threaten the welfare of the majority of the People.

But we also need to look deeper. Why do people behave as they do?

The Americans have a saying. "Your freedom stops where my freedom begins". or put another way, "The right to swing my fist stops where another person's nose begins".

We can all enjoy our freedoms no matter where we come from providing that we hold some essential beliefs in common.

Think about that for a moment.

Those who hold essentially very different beliefs to those of the majority, or those who don't recognise the limiting boundary between their fist and another's face may indeed consider themselves to be just expressing their "cultural difference" and go on to demand the freedom to do that.

And even to demand that we respect their (deviant) choice even at the expense of their actions' resulting in a limitation on the freedoms of others.

If someone wants to know what a "culture" holds dear, then look at how that culture teaches its members to treat other people (regardless of those peoples' race or socio-economic status  or what sort of food they eat or what sort of clothes they wear or what language they prefer to speak, or even what religion they follow)

There is a problem with that last one though, because religions teach us certain moral and ethical values which followers of other religions may not like or may even feel compelled to not even tolerate.

Some people want to take their babies in their prams and knock on doors on a Sunday morning, while others might like to sleep in, where others might like to assemble on another day to preach their lessons.

It does matter what people  say and what people believe if they then go on to act out what they are taught.

How can peoples from different cultures ever peacefully exist together unless they hold at least a few basic common values and beliefs?

Believe what you want. I don't care. What I care about is how you act, informed by those beliefs.

Sorry for the totem posts.

I really was responding to someone.   Smiley Sad

Looks like I was talking to myself now.

All I asked were for links to back up the posts we were expected to accept as fact.

Oh well, you know what they say, if you want someone intelligent to talk too, talk to yourself.  Smiley LOL

Thanks for that bedtime story ir. I thought that if I read it I would be delivered into the arms of Morpheus with a smile on my face. Instead I had a horrible nightmare. Can you offer any proof of this richness and vibrancy you speak of? Is it the experience of FGM that transcends more mundane societies? Perhaps sending young girls overseas to be married to a pensioner-aged man is part of that richness. What a lovely family it must be that thinks that way.

We believe Australians are a welcoming, generous and compassionate people. We believe an Australia where prejudice is unpopular and cruelty hurts at the polls, is possible. An Australia that recognises the equality and dignity of all people - no matter who you are, where you’re from or how you arrived here – and extends our values of fairness and friendship to everyone. We dream of a nation that celebrates diversity, made up of communities where people of our First Nations, asylum seekers, refugees, international students, skilled migrants and every other human being can experience the joy and security of belonging.
