We were 10 pound poms.  That meant that it was dirt cheap to get here but you had to stay for at least two years or else you had to pay the full fare plus your return fair.

It didn't take any effort for myself and siblings to settle down here because kids just do, but it was very difficult for my mum.

It was pretty obvious that they were waiting out the two years but guess what?  When the time came it was decided that we were better off here in Australia.

My mum loved Australia but I don't think she ever really settled down here.

I think that's the case with many migrants Joono. And fair enough too.

Re: Not everyone likes Australia.

AM3 has pointed out the answer.

Recently I researched, for a friend, the relative cost of living in UK/AU. Here are some highlights:

2013 Annual average wage in UK  = $36,712

Australia Full-Time Adult Average Weekly Ordinary Time Earnings  = $72,592

Living expenses UK & Aus.

Which whilst showing a lot of prices in UK are lower, the 64.81% greater median earnings in Australia overall make our purchasing power 16.63% higher, i.e. overall we are 16.63% better off with everything taken into consideration.

Re: Not everyone likes Australia.

We came here 21 years ago right away I felt like I was home. Love the place . It was sixteen years before I got to go back to the UK for a visit.  We now try to go every two years. But I would not want to live there .
