Obesity Rates Soar In Australia

Obesity rates in Australia and New Zealand have soared by more than 80 per  cent in the past 33 years, the biggest increase in a groundbreaking survey of  almost 200 countries.

The findings, which reveal almost one in three Australians is obese,  intensifies pressure on the government to restrict junk food marketing, restore  the healthy food-star rating system and force companies to cut sugar and fat in  processed food and drink.

Saturating children and adults with junk food advertising, particularly through  sport, means many parents are ''fighting a battle'' against the junk food  industry, Professor Moodie said. ''We have also failed to get anywhere with  front of pack labelling, or with food reformulation, because of huge resistance  from the industry to anything that might improve our health. Only now are people  starting to realise there are 10 teaspoons of sugar in a can of coke.''

People get obsessed with food. Look how popular those cooking shows are.

Wow Lind where do you do your shopping? I dont pay anything like that for bread, potatoes etc  Given the average takeway costs around $15 for 2 people (hamburger, chips ) how is that cheaper than healthy food?

Where do I do my shopping?

I live in a small country town and our only Grocery Shop is IGA. No choices of shopping around the different Supermarkets and getting the weekly bargains.

I was not talking about takeaways, I was talking about families with one small income and several mouth to feed. The mother would usually try and stretch the budget by buying cheaper cuts of meat or chicken etc. and instead of cooking some potatoes, would use some kind of pasta.

Besides, there is another kind of obesity. Let me tell you a story.

About 40 years ago I did not feel well and went to see our local Doctor. He knew our family and how busy I was in those days. My wheight was 16 stones at that time. Dr. took some tests and told me that I was diabetic. I panicked, because my Grandmother was an insulin dependant diabetic and died young. When I asked the Doctor what has to be done, he asked me what I had for breakfast, then said; don't tell me, a cup of coffee and a cigarette. Well, I had seven youngsters to get off to School each morning and a husband to go to work.

Then Doctor asked, what do you have for lunch? Ah, the same as breakfast I suppose. Well, he said, when evening comes and your whole brood is home you cook an enormous dinner for all, sit down and pile your plate up high, and later sit down in front of the TV. No wonder you are obese.

Then he ordered me to have a decent breakfast, a moderate lunch and a small serving of dinner, for the next 12 month. He wanted me to go down to 9½ stones and then test me for diabetes again. It was hard to change my routine, but I managed eventually and got down to 10½ stone. Just could not shift the last bit, but my tests came back negative. No more diabetes, and thankfully I have kept the wheight off since then. Today I wheigh 64Kg, this is just right for my hight.

Just the wrong way of eating can put the pounds on. During the day we move around and burn up what we ate, but at night time we relax and sit down, then go to sleep. Plenty of time for the fat to build up all night.

Lind I also live in a very small country town, I couldnt afford to shop at our local IGA, so once a forthnight we do a 60km round trip to Aldi, we save a small fortune.
