Optus hacked

Is anyone here affected by the Optus hack?

We are not, but my daughter received a communication from them to say her bank details & passport details & also licence details I think, had been stolen.

The annoying thing is she is not with Optus. She has not been with Optus for almost 6 years. Why, then, do they still have all her records on file? Very annoying.

You certainly don’t need to be hacked to get your personal info these days. We freely give it out more than we realise.
We recently stayed at a motel and had to complete a form with our Drivers license number, rego number and our contact details. They took a pre-swipe of our bank card for incidentals which ‘wouldn’t be used if we didn’t utilise the mini bar or steal the tv 😂

But just how safe is SAFE?  🤔
I think the padlock icon 🔒 on websites lulls us into a false sense of security imo.

A computer “genius” mate, once informed me that as far as the wide world web goes, there is always a back door to everything.

I’ve been with Optus pre-pd mobile for about 10yrs. Our landline is not Optus. We don’t have a landline phone.

I’ve not had any emails and truly don’t think I will.

Several reasons not to connect to the internet on a phone.

Why the need??

You've said on another thread that you use Messenger for video phone calls on your tablet.

You can't make these video calls without using the internet.

Your tablet is just a large phone.

Messenger is an App.

It can be used to call friends on FB - no telephone number required - or if someone is not a friend on FB - through a telephone number.

I only use it for friends through FB - no telephone number needed - no video (lol) I put a sticker over the camera - just in case my lippy is not straight.

The tablet is used for fun - never shopping - never banking - etc - cost around $300.

My phone is now I don't know how old - never connected - only used for calls - SMS. $80 - $20 Plan a month.

The PC - only used for business - and paranoid enough to everytime I bank or shop - Disk Clean - Defrag - Live Update Norton - Scan Norton - then go. $600 - not sure how old it is now.

Landline also - still used by friends.

All up nowhere near the cost of a decent Laptop or Smart Phone.

Never used a QR code - ever - order and pay the old way - not even during Covid.

A few different baskets for the eggs - doesn't mean I'm safe - but less chance of getting caught - I think.

Can they hack - Pre-Paid - all one does is buy a sim - stick it in the phone - no info needed.???

Jane from my understanding - a credit card swipe is OK - to use the card number one also needs the CCV or whatever - the three or four digit number on the back.

I think the concerning thing for my daughter is she isn't even with Optus and she is annoyed all those personal details were still on their records, 6 years later.

You would hope the motel would ditch those details too, after you leave, but is there any guarantee?

What if their details were hacked 6 years down the track? You'd assume you were safe.

Boy's and girls domino's post is a fine example of what not to reveal on a PUBLIC FORUM.

You have provided a TREASURE TROVE of information for a potential hacker -CRAZY, insane!

So many hints and tips for someone - wow , just WOW.

Messenger - one of the most well known hackable and insecure apps-tons of info on the net about this.

You have revealed you use an old laptop FOR BUSINESS - good chance you re still running windows 7, and even if you are not.......- good tips about potential backdoors (eg norton-"norton needs an update - download now"). Disk clean won't help with security - just cleans up sectors on your hard disk to keep thing running smooth.....maybe your laptop still has an OLD mechnical clunker which benefit from such things.

Have a look at KALI LINUX and see how easy it is for  beginner to hack windows using KALI, not to mention how easy it is to hack someone's wifi (cough fern wi-fi cracker, cough, nice easy to use GUI- also works well on hacking phones-start up, sit back and watch it hack your access point and reveal your password)-plenty of guides on you tube on how to do all these hacks....

Android tablet? Thanks for that info - you don't sound like an apple user - most will proudly state their loyalty.  "game (insert name here) needs an update" - thanks for that...

Old phone - awesome bit of info there-should make the job easier - most prob android, old apple no prob- kali will make mincemeat of that, good chance of out of date security - info available freely on youtube - prepaid won't help you.

Credit card? ever heard of rfid skimming??

sheesh - some just have no idea on a PUBLIC FORUM - better be careful who you offend - cos they now know what you use.

And hack what - good morning how are you.??

You have revealed you use an old laptop FOR BUSINESS - no I didn't - have another read. good chance you re still running windows 7, and even if you are not.......- good tips about potential backdoors (eg norton-"norton needs an update - download now"). The disc clean is simply to remove junk - defrag - when done takes less time to scan - I don't have a LAPTOP. lol

??   My CC  actually a debit card)  always has the same number.  Only the ccv on the back  is changed when renewed.

As for Messenger, yes, it's an app, but you had to tick the box to allow it access to your list of contacts - their phone numbers - otherwise it just doesn't work.

If you don't want a video call, then don't press the video symbol when you answer.

Facebook Messenger uses the internet.

I have to agree with Mussolini on just about everything here.

Sorry Dom, but your head in the sand about being 'safe' is just not on.

I'm paranoid enough to not do on-line banking.

Read my answer to the nitwit - he got most wrong.

A debit Card - is not a Credit Card - and it was CCs being discussed.

Oh - I think my DOB on FB is 1919. lol
