Pet food recalled after death and illness of dogs

A pet food linked to the death and illness of several Victoria Police dogs has been pulled off the shelves.

Advance Dermocare dry dog food has been recalled after one police dog died and eight others became sick from an incurable condition called megaesophagus.

A Mars Petcare Australia spokeswoman said 3kg, 8kg and 15kg bags of Advance Dermocare dry dog food would be recalled.

"We advise dog owners who have purchased this product to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund," she said.

"These bags will have been purchased from speciality retailers and veterinarians.

"No other Advance products or varieties are affected by the recall."

The spokeswoman said the company had run "hundreds of tests" and found no link between its product and megaesophagus.

She said the voluntary recall was a precaution.

"The health and wellbeing of Australian pets is our number one priority, so we were deeply concerned to learn that a number of dogs have been affected by megaesophagus – a condition that is generally not associated with food," she said.

"We have now run hundreds of tests on Advance Dermocare and have not found a link between the condition and our product.

"Regardless, we are voluntarily recalling these products as a precaution while we work to get to the bottom of the issue as soon as we can.

"We will continue to provide information to University of Melbourne to enable further testing, and consult with the Australian Veterinary Association."

Victoria Police Dog Squad Inspector Jon Woodyatt had said the dogs, aged between two and eight, fell ill in December.

Mars is advising concerned pet owners to contact their vet or call the company on 1800 640 111.

"No other Advance products or varieties are affected by the recall."  A quote from the company.

Hopefully Rosie is safe, David

Don't worry David, Rosie and Foo will be okay, it's looking so far as though it is a "one batch" problem (hopefully) and that it has been caught in time... sadly not for the dogs that have already died or suffered though .. Smiley Sad
