Plane missing with 236 people on board

Malaysia Airlines says one of its planes has gone missing on the way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.

A statement from the airline says flight MH370 lost contact with air traffic controllers at 2:40am local time, just over two hours into the flight.

The plane, a Boeing 777-200, left Kuala Lumpur at 12:41am on Saturday, and had been due to arrive in Beijing at 6:30am local time.

The company says the plane was carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members.

The airline says it is contacting the next-of-kin of all passengers and crew, which includes people of 13 different nationalities.

In a statement on the airline's website, group chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said the airline was working with authorities to locate the aircraft.

"Focus of the airline is to work with the emergency responders and authorities and mobilise its full support," the statement said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected passengers and crew and their family members."

The airline says it will provide regular updates on its website.

The ABC understand Malaysia Airlines will hold a press conference on the incident shortly.

Once active, the Dukane DK120 emits a pulse once a second that can be detected by sonar equipment up to two nautical miles away. The beacon works at a depth of 20,000 feet — far deeper than the waters where officials believe the Malaysian plane went down.

It’s made to stay active for at least 30 days, per an FAA requirement, but may last a few days longer than that, depending on when it was made.

....yes it is a pointless discussion LL esp. when posters as recently seen just resort to derision.....ac, monman, grizz, chuk- you know, the usual derisory band of forum thugs....

your own words were "don't believe everything you read"

I think the fact that there is no information whatsoever, leads to speculation............... 4 of the passengers are reasonably local to me and I see their family members asking and waiting for answers.................... none of us have a clue. So, I don't think it's an unreasonable thing to speculate.

thats not what i was getting at, but a good point.Smiley Happy

Who's ac?

The only derision I saw was the attack on Grizz over a typo.

It's odd and slightly amusing how those who attack then go into overdrive attacking others for what they've just done themselves.

Woops, had to correct that spelling mistake lest I be attacked for my lack of spelling ability.  Please excuse any other typos or spellos.

P007 - have a read back, I think you will see all the personal jibes you have been making to other posters?  Some in unwarranted reaction to posts where you have mistaken the meaning/intention of them.

The topic of this thread is pretty clear isn't it? A plane missing with 239 people aboard, a mystery so far as to what happened to it?

If the plane isn't found for 2 weeks, 2 months, a year + after it went missing, that is a long time of silence in no speculation is discussed as to what may have happened to it.

Some of the incorrect info reported in the beginning came from Malaysian officials, not stuff the newspapers made up.

i think you'll find its always the case if you don't hold mainstream views on a topic.  its probably better to seek out like-minded individuals or forums . just an observation.

Inform the rest of us, what you get out of making posts like that please? Especially in a serious thread about the potential loss of 239 people?

An adult conversation by adults would be more suitable.

"its a fairly pointless discussion anyway. i wonder what it is that leads people to have theories without any hard information. i'm doing the old fashioned wait and see what transpired before commenting on what might have happened."

I agree with that LL. I have a background that allows me to consider what might have happened and what is happening (part of my training involved pattern searching  over the sea/land),  but like you I am interested in the eventual outcome.

AL: "So, I don't think it's an unreasonable thing to speculate." It is human AL, but a topic like this does not require speculations from P007 that include insinuations outside of  what would be expected, and certainly not with silly hints at conspiracies.
