I always thought that the reason why fertility treatments are producing multiple birth is because the woman produces several eggs, or more than one embryo is being implanted, not because the embryos are splitting.
Sorry, I worded that badly. I meant that even if fertility treatment caused more than one ovum to be released, it would be just as rare for one of them to divide into three. Same with in vitro fertilisation. I have heard of identical twins in in vitro births, but these little beings are very frail, so probably is fairly rare.

A few twins in our family but none identical.
