Ok we have had the "Poor Illegal Refugee" the "Poor Dole Bludger" the "Poor whatever" thread so now what about the "Poor Self Inflicted Addict" thread.
We may as well add them to the taxpayers burden as well. We can cater for their "special needs" out of the bottomless pit of our national debt.

What gives you the impression that i have not worn shoes like yours?
A week? Try one stint of eight and a half years and another stint of 8 years.
A possitive outlook and sheer determination coupled with hard yakka got me through that lot without a lot of outside help.
I managed to stay in the white area without venturing into the dark grey or the black

I think if we go a long way back we can all find a Baron or a Duke some where 🙂

Nova, thereby hangs a problem. Most people look for the easy way out in the short term, "the quick fix" disregarding the the dire future consequences of "the quick fix"
Like the person who gets into financial hot water (by their own choice) and then goes on a embezzlement spree or turns to robbery or fraud.

poddster I cant understand the point and connection you are trying to make.
Is this even on topic? and yes, this is a real query not a mock one.

The point is, that the vast majority of addicts are taking the easy way out in the short term when in fact what they are doing is making matters a lot worse.
The excuse that they didn't know what was likely to happen when the get addicted jut holds no water, it is common knowledge.
The results of addiction should be widely and graphically made known at every opportunity

Thank you for your reply- I appreciate it.
I cannot and wont speak on behalf of addicts- who am I to assume to know why they take drugs, what drives them, and why they are not able to say no?
I have personally known only a couple of drug addicts, and I keep away from drugs and for the most part, alcohol. I have had certain experiences that have led me to make certain decisions..not easy ones, but they were mine to make.
I dont put myself up high and judge people who take drugs, I just dont think Im better than them...
poddster, we dont have the same viewpoint, and Im OK with that.

EVERYONE judges people, actions, situations, events and in fact EVERYTHING that all of their senses can sense every microsecond of their conscious life.
To say that a person is non judgemental is meaningless. Non judgemental is a buzz word used by people who have a desire to elevate and set themselves apart from others.
A very simple example :-
Why do people look both ways before crossing a busy road? Are they not judging if it is safe to do so?
We do it subconsciously ALL the time. when the elevator doors open we are checking to see if it is in deed an elevator that we are entering and not just the lift well.
How long do you think a person would last without their judgement?

But you judge everybody in comparison to yourself. That is very egocentric. People are different with different capabilities. Some kids can play Beethoven by the time they are 6, some people can run 1000km marathon, some are incredible swimmers or runners. What if these people would say that unless you can do whatever they do that means you are just lazy, and it is your fault. The fact is hat some people will never manage to play the piano, doesn't matter how many lessons they take, or paint or become good in gymnastics. I bet my bottom dollar that you cannot do all that well.
Some people cannot play piano and some are just not good coping with life. My SIL employed amazingly talented and clever programmer who has Asperger. When we found about about him he was a very confused sixteen years old, having problems at school, starting to hang around with some bad crowd. His mother, a friend of a friend, was frantic suspecting drugs are involved. My SIL gave him job for few weeks to see what he could do. He was excellent, stayed for 2 years and then moved on; last time I saw him he had a $150K job and he was not even 20 then. He could have very easily go over the edge, and people like you would have written him off.

You are mistaken on several counts Nova.
I acknowledge that I am judgemental in all areas that is as it should be. Without judgement it is not possible to make informed decisions.
It follows logic that if a person has made a bad decision than they either lack judgement or or they have ignored their judgement, both of which are flaws.
Children from a young age should be taught how to cope with with whatever situation they find themselves in by their parents, teachers and others in their life.
Unfortunately that is fast becoming a lost responsibility. A lot of parents, teachers, and people around them are too busy with themselves to put any effort int raising kids.
I am all in favour recognising and encouraging achievement and talent no matter where it comes from or who has it.
