Meanwhile washing your windscreen.

Thats good   ..... Aldi isnt Au owned BUT they do employ 1000's of Aussie workers, buy AU grown meant n produce etc and their prices cant be beaten.  Apparently they are great to deal with if you are a wholesaler, 'cause they pay their accounts on time ...... If I was rich, I might shop at WW or Coles for all my meat and grocery needs  but Im not, so I am more than happy to save money by shopping at Aldi and pack my own bags.

Plus I dont like the fact that WW support/own poker machines, so I use them as a last resort

You forgot about -

All Aldi's profits go straight to Germany

Aldi pays minimal tax in Australia.

I put my stuff on the check out in order I think they should be packed,

Ok I am OCD.

All the cleaning, Shampoo stuff together, all the packet stuff together and last the bread and crackers  because I dont want them to be flattened

I do exactly the same thing, there has to an order to pack them, when using a trolley I shop in order

to make it easier to go through the register so things are in order.

May have to back track a couple of times but I dont mind.

Wifey prefer the serviced registers, says the price is the same if we had to scan & pack our items,

and by using the the serviced registers they do 2/3rds of the work and keeps people employed.

Why not just pack 'em your trolley, the way you want them scanned? I do it that way, saves a heap of back n forthing

Fair enough, no one is forced to shop there

Re: The end of the checkout?

Lyh,

Sometimes will do it that way but depends on the items and location.

We do a big shop probably every 4 to 6 weeks using a trolley.

Most times we can do the shop with a basket each, wifey usually does the meat, fruit & veg,

because my fruit & veg shopping skills are bad, and i cover the rest.

You would need a few trolleys Trav LOL, I shop fornighty and that's bad enough     ..... If I lived near Aldi, I would shop every cpl of days. I dont buy supermarket meat, ( we dont like it ) I also dont buy many supermarket fruit  n veggies ( too many chemical, sprays etc.), we mainly eat what we can grow and preserve, store, freeze.

There's a petrol station near where I used to work that still provides these services.

You can either serve yourself or wait in your car for someone to come out and fill the tank and do anything else you might need.

If you need air in your tyres they do that too.

Re: The end of the checkout?

I think it is inevitable but what is concerning me more is the demise of money in this scenario.

What it seems to imply is shoppers can put things in the trolley and sensors will automatically scan and tally the goods and out you walk, with it all neatly added to your credit card, I suppose. Or maybe there will be a machines at the pay station, along the lines of those eg at kmart, where you just elect to pay cash or credit etc

My hope is that there will be some sort of  display on these high tech trolleys that will show you an on going total.

But I can't see that we, the customers, would be allowed to take these trolleys out of the store or into the carpark. I suspect we would have to transfer our shopping to a low tech cart.

Currently, I am finding our local K Mart often has no check out operators, only the auto machines open at the pay station. There is someone supervising of coruse, but if you want the stuff scanned by staff, you'd be out of luck.

Coles often has only 2 checkouts open, the rest of us have to crowd through self-serve.

My biggest beef is with self serve if you have a lot of stuff. It is just too small a shelf, made for small number of purchases. But if they don't have many check outs open, then you're more or less forced to go through with a big trolley load.

My other beef is that 80% of the self serve stations everywhere seem to be 'card only'. I can't see why they are not all cash or card. I am sick of being front of the queue but having to wait because only one machine will do cash.Smiley Sad

Oh and I use these bags at Aldi & Coles. I pack my own stuff, even if I get an operator. I am not as organised as some here but I put cold stuff eg meat, cream in the red bag, vegies & fruit in the green bag, and other stuff in the other bags. It's a system of sorts and I can pack as fast as they are scanned.Smiley Happyshopping bag.JPG

Re: The end of the checkout?

I havent seen the "card only " sign for petrol, the 2 servos im my town take either, as do all the ones in Hamilton   ..... maybe it's a big city "thing"

I never buy more then a cpl of things for WW or Coles ( sometimes, I dont need anything from them ), so the SS checkout suits me  just fine  but I can see how a large trolley full of "stuff" would create a problem.
