NOW is not the time to replace our Prime Minister. The country doesn’t need it. The Liberal Party shouldn’t entertain it and any such decision next Tuesday would plunge this country back into the chaos of the Labor years. And that is the one thing that we cannot afford.
What this country desperately needs is stability, continuity and a longer-term view — time to consider the big issues and develop sensible plans to tackle many of the challenges our country is facing.
We need to move away from a political life-cycle that sees our leaders dumped as soon as the waters get a little choppy. Running the country requires a long-term vision and the time to make that vision flourish. If Tuesday’s party room meeting decides to dump Tony Abbott as PM, Australia will become a laughing stock — a country known for changing leaders almost as often as we change our socks.
The Sunday Herald Sun is the first to acknowledge that Tony Abbott has made mistakes — some of them significant. But despite a series of recent blunders culminating in the so-called “knightmare captain’s pick’’ in giving Prince Philip a knighthood on Australia Day, Tony Abbott needs more time. He has importantly acknowledged his mistakes.
He says he can change, and that he has learnt lessons. Now we need to give him time to prove that he can be a great Prime
Minister.
He should go the full term and the voters should decide.
