WITH DIGNITY @ STARBUCKS

What dignity these two showed when arrested for just "sitting" at Starbucks waiting for their friend to arrive.

Shame on the employee who was scared and reported them for sitting at a table.

I understand Stawks xxxx

I think that the police turned it into what it became and it's terrible that they did that.  All they had to do was quietly say to the men that they thought it was a 'nothing' situation .. they'd have done well to have sat down and had a coffee with them, then told the manager and employee it that it is quite silly to do what they did and a waste of police time.

It seems, from what I have seen, in the USA, people call the police for a vast amount of reasons that are nothing to do with police at all, rather, just ordinary stuff that citizens should fix amongst themselves without violence and/or stupidity.

true but when someone does call the police and they come you would expect that police officer to be able to look at a situation and deduct is this an 'arrest situation' or is the a 'nothing to see here' situation.

id like to think our police would handle it better but after the guy maced on his front lawn i think prolly not.

I certainly wouldn't expect to  be entitled to sit in a busy cafe, monopolising a table, using the dunny, and not buy anything.

would you expect to be arrested and taken to jail and held for 9 hours as a punishment?

or asked to leave and perhaps escorted from the premises with a tresspass warning?

there was nothing to show these guys did anything to warrant being arrested.

and obviously the starbucks company has no problem with people sitting in their shops and not buying a coffee straight away if they say they are waiting for a friend to arrive.

so i agree with you to a point, no, its not ok to just sit for hours in a shop (any shop) and not buying anything.

and any shop has the right to ask any patron to leave, really without any reason.

the whole story was showing how one employee reacted to some people he/she had a dislike for. and it shows how police still behave towards the black community in the USA. not unlike we still treat aboriginals in our country.if you read the stas on the people in our prisons it clearly shows a much higher percentage of inmates are aboriginal than white. now we also know our legal system does 'get it wrong' at times so you must also figure there are both white and aboriginals in our prisons who shouldnt be there.

but because the percentages are skewed towards aboriginals it must also be a higher percentage of aboriginals are in fact in prison wrongly.

Quite often, I go into a cafe to wait for friends to join me for lunch or morning tea, and if they are late, I could be sitting there for quite a while.  If that looks like I am sitting there just using the cafe, not buying anything and using their utilities, then that's the uncalled for staff interpretation.  Without asking me first why I am there before calling the police, it would point to hysteria and paranoia on the part of the staff.  Perhaps that's the way now of 21st century dysfunction, shoot first, ask questions later when it's too late and the damage is done to innocent people? ...  Smiley Indifferent

Fair enough, opinion does seem to outweigh facts these days.

Opinion are just that, opinions.  They are formed from the information given at the time, rightly or wrongly.

Rightly/wrongly are the operative words and for now, unless different information is offered, I will stay with the opinion that the police could have acted with diplomacy and manners.  In fact, in my opinion, they should never have been called.

However, I do agree with you that there are many times when opinions do not take account of facts.  That's probably because, in many cases, the facts are not known until much later due to media that have knee jerk reactions and print what they like, not what is real.
