WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wordle

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-26/why-wordle-has-become-a-new-online-obsession/100782794

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education ๐Ÿคฃ

After the eliminator, the pattern would be one of these: _OBLY, _ODLY, _OLLY, _OOLY, _OWLY.

Rather than taking a blind stab, I knew that Iโ€™d need to whittle things down. Choosing a word that had an L in 3rd position would tell me whether there was a double L pattern; consonants that I was keen to rule out were D (or G in 1st position), J, F, W, N (or B), P. I settled on gulph as the eliminator and thankfully it pinpointed the solution.

Itโ€™s all so straightforward that I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s anything to say here. One word followed another, and so on until it was done.

Wellโ€ฆ in lieu of anything interesting to point out with the working out of this Octordle, let me write a short tale.

Once upon a time, Porteroi the Fox came slinking out of the woods in Ferny Creek. The early morning sun lay glossily upon his beautiful brown coat as he paused, looking interestedly at the dainty little terrier lying down upon a soft bed of grass.

โ€œFair greetings from the Deep Woods,โ€ he called out in his well-regulated voice. โ€œI am Porteroi, Fox of these parts. May I know your name, dear sir?โ€

The terrier did not stir for a long moment, then lazily twitched an ear and turned to face the fox. โ€œWell, hello thenโ€, said he, and yawned delicately. โ€œMcTartan is my name. Youโ€™ll forgive my not rising, for Iโ€™m tired out from an exhausting morning being groomed and patted.โ€

โ€œMost taxing, Iโ€™m sureโ€, replied Porteroi, who would rather have liked to be groomed and petted rather than have various missiles launched in his direction. โ€œHave you an inclination to go leaping and playing for a while, my dear McTartan? I find myself at something of a loose end.โ€

The little dog gave a shrug. โ€œOh, I am all too comfortable here, in this nice warm patch of sun, lying down on the nice grass. But you can leap over me if you like.โ€

This wasnโ€™t much of a suggestion, yet Porteroi accepted the offer in lieu of anything more exciting. โ€œA leap over you? Why, indeed, I shall leap with the utmost delight!โ€ he returned, and positioning himself carefully, he gathered his limbs and sprang gracefully over McTartan.

โ€œWhat fun!โ€ he announced as he trotted back around to face the reclining dog. โ€œLet me try that again!โ€

Oh, no, my dear fox, my good Porteroiโ€ฆ for I began this tale with those time-honoured words: once upon a time!

Blare flare glare aware share spare snare quare whare reave  - but neither quare nor whare were likely.

Using sling:

blare = _g___

flare = _g___

glare = _g__y

aware = _____

share = g____

spare = g____

snare = g__y_

reave = _____

Using angel:

blare = y__yy

flare = y__yy

glare = y_yyy

aware = g__y_

share = y__y_

snare = yg_y_

reave = y__y_

Sling would serve me best.

Iโ€™d no suspicion that lingo was the solution for 2R. Even less did I think Iโ€™d not need an eliminator at all! But as you can see, one word led to the other in a wonderfully logical unveilingโ€ฆ Pilot was obvious after lingo. Then only voila would fit for 4L, and that led straight to vowel for 3L.

After that, the W led to wrest for 4R, and 1R showed __IO_. There was only one word that would fit. The same held true for 1L; only axial would fit the __I_L with yellow A pattern.

Finally I was on the last word - 3R - and again it was a case of only one word fitting. I had yellow R, C and E. The E could only go into 1st or 2nd position (and I thought it would almost certainly in 2nd position). The C would therefore be 1st or 3rd. U was unplayed at this stage, and with E out of the running as a second letter, and Y not fitting into the pattern, that left U as the 4th position letter. It had to be recur.

Re: WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

Well done on your 44 yesterday!

I was away from home but tried it out on my phone (OMG I hate doing it like that and not viewing a whole screen at once) & remember seeing lingo float by. I thought-aha, countess might get onto this one quickly!

My results were just ordinary but can't recall exact score.

Today's wordle was a bit of a pain.๐Ÿ˜‚

Straight after my second turn, I had all 5 letters but I couldn't think of what the answer might be. I was very drawn to leach but of course didn't have C.
I wasted a bit of time trying to make a word that started with H.
The main frustration was I couldn't use another eliminator as I already had the letters!
I was almost inclined to try leach anyway but then thought, no, I can do this!

Well, what a pain this was. My first 2 eliminators didn't lead clearly to anything at all.

There were a few spots that were suggestive of patterns but no certainty.

Spoiler
30 cl.jpgSo on turn 3, I used another eliminator, pricy.
After that, fortunately, some of it started to fall into place.
probably my luckiest move was with #4, I felt it was probably between foggy and doggy and I prefered foggy and knew my score was shot anyway, so I might as well take the risk. Then #5 was a certainty, which only left #3.  And smash had been eliminated as a possibility.

PS I possibly should have taken a risk on #2 at turn 3, as i fancied coach. But it could have been roach, so i figured go with pricy as more useful.
