I am sitting here looking at my dog laying on her cushion where she spends most of her time now.
Honey is 16 going on 17 and has been with me since she was 6 weeks old.
On Tuesday I took her for her booster parvo and her regular eye check. The vet said that her eyesight is now gone. She may see bright light but that is all. She is almost deaf also. Her general health is that of a healthy 10 year old even her teeth.
She still takes herself out to the toilet, comes for a pat, wags her tail and seems to be happy.
Last night I was talking to my son on the phone and he said "Mum what are you doing she lives in a silent dark world".
So now I wonder what am I doing. Is it for her, or is it for me that I have not contemplated her last journey to the vet.
What would you do.

When my beautiful Kita was diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer ( long cell something or other carcinoma in her leg) I was a real mess and saying to the vet to put her down because I didn't want her to suffer.
He looked me in the eye and said to me "It is not causing her any pain at the moment, and she is still happy and healthy elsewhere. Why do it now - she does not know she has cancer"
That brought me to my senses, and with natural anti cancer therapies I had my beautiful girl for another 3 years before we knew it was time to let her go.
Your darling Honey is NOT human, she will not stress over the fact that she can't hear very well, or see - she can still smell you ( a dogs strongest sense!!) and knows familiar surroundings.
Keep on loving her - she will let you know when the time has come.

Honey is growing old gracefully..She loves you no less than before just the same as you do with her..She still has spirit & a will to go on ..No obvious pain as yet ..Enjoy the time you both still have together..She will tell you in time if things become too hard in her own special way..Give her lots of cuddles in the mean time and feel no guilt..we had a dog like honey that lived just pass 19 wonderful years. He was blind.. lost his hearing & still managed to shower us with loving licks & a wagging tail when he waddled up to us each day..He was still a happy boy to be with us ( you just could tell)
He died peacefully in his sleep one morning..Just put up his head from his bed & gave a look and then closed his eyes

Just do not move the furniture and be careful when you go for walk, as she cannot see or hear she could get a fright if touched by a stranger or if approached by other dog.

Hi channysmum we all get old but I am so sorry to hear that you are stressing about whether you are doing your best for your dear pet. You are doing all the right things
IMO if Honey refuses to eat and drink for more than two days and/or becomes incontinent then I would say it might be time to see your vet.
Getting a wee seeing eye dog sounds like a lovely idea for both Honey and yourself

silly old duffer got skittled on the highway behind me.
He was 13, mostly deaf and didn't see overly well. I doubt he even saw what hit him, it would have been instant.
The poor old bugger had not long had surgery on a growth on his butt, and a little tumour removed from his bottom eyelid which had been irritating his eye, and a big course of antibiotics to fix an infection in his bone where a canine tooth had been removed. So he was actually feeling the best he had in ages, and back to his happy cheeky self. I had the day off and he came with me to the tip, and for a drive to the gin, and we did things that make dogs happy. When I asked him if he wanted to come inside , just before dark, he trotted over to his day bed under the steps and lay there with a happy face and fooled me into thinking that's where he was going to stay. Cunning old bugger, as soon as I went inside he went off on his scavenging mission, but never made it across the road.
That was a bit over 12 months ago. I said no more dogs.
two weeks later I saw this picture
a week after that I sprung him from the pound.
This was taken 12 months after his mug shot.
