Where does it come from?

Well I have just been shopping and all the Colgate toothpaste that I looked at comes from Thailand.

It would be great if others posted examples of products and where they come from as I am sure there are plenty of surprises out there.

I know I have plenty more to add Woman LOL

Re: Where does it come from?

Yes Australia does import NZ Apples and Avocados.

Years ago we where in Byron bay and my husband did not believe I had bought Avocados from NZ in a shop, I dragged him into the shop to show him the box with New Zealand on it:)

While the major supermarkets might sell imported apples from China (or NZ), the independent fruit/vege shops might. Or imported onions (from wherever they come from) . Imported onions are sold in Aust, but supermarkets tend to sell Aust grown ones.

I know someone who lives in an area in NZ where apples are grown. They work for an apple export company and that person does the paper work for exporting apples to Australia - so NZ grown apples are sold here.

I'm not saying that New Zealand have no produce of their own

but because they have a deal with China they cannot be trusted and how can we be sure that anything made in NZ does not have it's origins in China

there is a fresh fruit and veg shop in my shopping centre that only sells South Australian produce

and the odd things that are not {maybe out of season here } are clearly displayed in a seperate section

Re: Where does it come from?

Toothpaste: we buy Cedel.

It is Australian but hard to get. You can pick it up from chemists sometimes.

Otherwise, if you are prepared to buy a box, you can buy directly from the company. Thats what we do.

How can you trust Aust brands either?  They have 'imported ingredients' ( no country of origin stated) on a lot of their packets labels as well. Probably more Chinese produce coming in to Aust through them..

Those dodgy frozen berries (Hep A) were imported directly by an Aust company.

Australia has a FTA with China coming into effect in 2015.

nearly every section of frozen foods you will find one or two varieties that say 100% australian grown

better still dig up a portion of your water guzzling lawn and grow your own

most ethnic people have a vegie garden and it's very rewarding

Re: Where does it come from?

Yes, best to grow own vege if you can. Must be a million times better than eating vege frozen and shipped from China. I buy what I can direct fresh from farners at a market.

The food labelling laws need to be changed. Ingredients on food labels - imported- isn't good enough for country of origin.

Re: Where does it come from?

I wont buy any imported f & v, I grow quite a lot of my own, buy/swap from my friends or at our local farmers market  .... I never buy frozen vegetables or fruit, wont take the chance, dont buy supermarket eggs/red meat either   ....  I notice I am buying less and less at the supermarket these days, too much rubbish on the sheves.
