sterelising the disabled

I was reading an article today (on the Daily telegraph site,Sydney)  about banning people from taking disabled children overseas to be sterilised.

It got me wondering why it cannot be done in Australia as in some cases I can understand why parents would want this done.

It is not a nice topic, but i think if a child is so disabled mentally or physically that they cannot care for themselves it is just adding a terrible burden to the family and child themselves if a pregnancy occurs.

I noticed the other point listed as a pro was to stop the child being sexually abused but I cannot see what difference being sterilised would make to that..as disgusting as it is it seems there are always deviates preying on these people .

I think it would surly be better to have a board of experts be able to allow sterilisation in some cases

In the article it talks about how sad it is that some women who have been sterilised want to have children later and collect prams and baby photos ect because they are so unhappy but if they have such issues I wonder how they would deal with a baby they had to give away  or abortion in the past if they had been unable to keep it.

sometimes I question if the rights of the individual outweigh commonsence

Re: sterelising the disabled

From the World English Dictionary  sterilize or sterilise  (ˈstɛrɪˌlaɪz)  vb

( tr ) to render sterile; make infertile or barren

But I wonder, just what is a polksalad?

Thanks, that is interesting.  One of those words (like sterilise) that has 2 ways of spelling.

But Elvis said I could use his spelling for my ID.  Heart

Re: sterelising the disabled

Good common sense to sterilise the mentally disabled.

I have seen women in nursing homes who have to be given the pill each day - often a battle to do so - these women will never ever be able to sustain a pregnancy.

If it makes the carers lives easier by removing the stress of periods for both the woman and the carer, seems a good way to go.

And it is not feasable for these women to have a baby and they would not know anyway.

There is a group home in my town - there are several women - none of them should ever be allowed to have a pregnancy, if it were ever possible.

Wandering the streets and sitting at the coffee shop watching cartoons on the ipad is about the most they can hope for.

Re: sterelising the disabled

Good common sense to sterilize the stupid.  That way they cannot pass their defective genes to further generations.

Good common sense to sterilize the obese.  They are consuming a disproportionate amount of a rapidly decreasing food supply.

Good common sense to sterilize Catholics.  They produce too many mouths to feed.

Good common sense to sterilize aggressive people.  Their offspring could inherit that trait.

Good common sense to sterilize alcohol consumers.  Saturday nights would be far more peaceful.

Good common sense to sterilize those who use excessive water for bathing.  Oh, wait a minute!  This is Australia......not a problem.

What quirks do you want eliminated from the gene pool?
