Re: the nothing ,anything ,everything thread

I had to move some furniture, today.

There was a pair of magpies in a tree out the front of the house next door, and the whole time we were at the house, they sang.

Chortle chortle gargle gargle.

When we brought a piece of furniture out, the song would change - Chortle gargle carol gargle.

Or, in magpie, that would be "And now we have lot number 16, a scruffy reproduction art deco chest of drawers...".

Every time we brought something new out, their song would change, to suit, ha ha.

On the way home, on either side of the street, there were two small groups of cockatoos.

I slowed down a bit to take a look - anyone I know? ha ha.

The old bird that drops by here, in the evening was with  them.

They looked at me like I was just another passing motorist.

He didn't...

He took to the air, and then "led" me down the street.

Sort of chasing me, but from the position of being slightly in front of me.

He was already here when I got in, waiting for me on the pergola bridge.

I put a bit of bread up on the bridge for him and one of the younger birds promptly took it.

He's great, he's mastered the "Hang on, that wasn't supposed to happen..." look, ha ha.

I put another piece of bread up for him and that cheered him up, ha ha.

Well, if he's going to go to the trouble of "following" me home, then it's the least I can do to make his journey worthwhile, ha ha.

The birds come, the cat comes, and if I'm around I shoo the cat away, ha ha.

But even I have to register a mild objection to having to shoo it away at half past six on a Saturday morning.

Half past ten? No worries.

Half six was just a touch early, for me, ha ha.

Looking on the bright side, at least you don't own a Komodo dragon.

I don't know how I'd go trying to shoo one of them away, in the early hours, ha ha.

Re: the nothing ,anything ,everything thread

Pyrex wasn't here for breakfast, yesterday.

Takeaway didn't seem to miss her, ha ha.

She's back, today.

I went to check if the bird's water dish needed filling, and found it almost full.

That's strange, it's a hot day and usually they manage to drain it, pretty quickly.

Stretch up onto my toes and peer into the doorway...

Yes, sure enough, there's fuzzy little bottom there, ha ha.

She must be about 10 months old, not that I've managed to keep an accurate track of her age, ha ha.

Theoretically, she'll come into season at "about" 12 months.

I think her older sister waited until about 14 months, so it's a guesstimate value, at best.

At ten months, I suppose, she's more interested in looking at boys, rather than looking for boys, ha ha.

She's back, she's had her adventure, who knows where she went, ha ha .

Who knows where we'll go from here...

Re: the nothing ,anything ,everything thread

I was having a shower a bit earlier on and had the window open to try to demistify the bathroom a bit.

The wattlebird, and I think this is the one that likes to follow me, it's hard to tell...

Up until a week or so ago there were four wattlebirds, here.

Then that became eight, or maybe ten, ha ha.

So, there's a wattlebird, on the windowsill, looking into the bathroom...

"I can hear running water...".

"I'm having a shower, bird...".

"Can I come in? I wont take up very much room... I could perch on that rail...".

"Or I could stop having a shower, leave the door open and you could dance around in the shower to your heart's content...".

"That sounds like a great idea...!".

"Doesn't it? And it isn't going to happen because I'm not letting you in the house".

"You're mean...".

"Would you like me to rig up some kind of sprinkler in the garden?".

"No. It wouldn't be the same".

"You're still not coming in the house".

"You're mean...".

Re: the nothing ,anything ,everything thread

There's a wooden block attached to the side of the possum house.

The block has two holes drilled down into it, for the pins on the bird water dish.

The water dish slides up, and away, to be cleaned, or down, back into place, and can be refilled in situ.

s-l300.jpg

It looks a lot like this one.

For the convenience of the birds, and the possums, but not mine, ha ha, the block is set just above head height.

This means that putting the dish back in can take a little wiggling - lining the pins up with the holes, while not being able to see exactly where things are.

Which isn't a worry, most days.

Most days...

Days when there isn't a possum sprawled on the verandah, with the tip of her tail resting against the other side of the block...

There's about half a centimetre of leeway... ha ha.

Get it right, or wake up grumpy, ha ha.

Re: the nothing ,anything ,everything thread

The morning's entertainment consisted of, I'm assuming, a King parrot chuckling in the big tree.

Assuming, because it's a matter of green bird-green tree syndrome.

I know they're different shades of green, but once it's tucked away in the foliage it disappears, much like a Cheshire cat - all that's "visible' is the chuckle, ha ha, or indeed, chuckle, chuckle...

Re: the nothing ,anything ,everything thread

By devious means I managed to distract the wattlebirds so that they didn't queue up, waiting for me to put the wattlebird possum breakfasts out, so they could raid them.

Having got one set up, I get the other one in place, and there's a light scraping noise, just behind me...

I look back and there's a little face, looking very cute, in the doorway - I can smell breakfast... (hopeful expression...), ha ha.

Banana!!

Dad!

Banana!!

Feed me!! Feed me!!

Said the baby wattlebird, with it's beak already full of banana, ha ha.

I went out there and couldn't see a single bird.

I put the banana on the shelf, and didn't even manage two steps before there were three of them on it, ha ha.

Wild birds? Sure, they're wild about bananas, ha ha.

Re: the nothing ,anything ,everything thread

I have a virtual five dollar note that gets used for "I bet you five bucks" bets.

I agonised over whether or not to put "Cheshire cat" in that previous entry.

"Do you think Tas'll post a Cheshire cat picture? Bet you five bucks she will...", ha ha.

I might be up five bucks.

Of course, if my inner child has taken it and gone to squander it on lollies, then that's it, ha ha.
