workers galore ?

Seems the powers are concerned about a lack of suburban citizen willing workers from the big smoke happy to live remote from family and friends and civilised comfort , and slave for beer money on the orchards in primitive conditions , zombie fatique , grinding emotion privations

The only way that will happen is if for the duration of pandemic conditions job seeker payments incl coronavirus suppliment is not penalised by earnings from the harvest trail , with accommadation eligiable for rent assistance - as with enough income , which will not be anywhere near the average national wage, maybe , just maybe , with just a little sense of self preservation , all impediments will be overcome

Why would they bother? They're getting enough from the government to just stay at home!

Re: workers galore ?

No, people of other nationalities are generally the same; some are capable of more than others, and those that come to do backbreaking manual work are those who know they can do it.  But kids nowadays spend lot of time sitting on their bum.  We used to walk to school; I have no recollection of ever being driven.  The car only came out of the garage when we went for trips, or in the winter when my father drove to work.  But in summer he more often cycled.  After school we kids would go out to play = run, swim, climb trees or cycle in summer, and ski, skate or go on nearby slope with our sled in the winter, plus I used to do gymnastics, ballet, taking horse riding lessons, played table tennis, and in one time I did bit of rowing; basically all physical activities.   To ski it meant climbing the mountain, and then ski down, no lifts.  There was no TV until after dinner IF there was something my parents approved off.  I did also do some art and language classes in one time, but predominantly the time out of school was spent in physical activity.  Now kids spend awful lot of time on computer and watching TV; and parents drive them to school;   there is NO way they have the same overall fitness that we had.

But even then, some people were more physically fit than others.  If you think that we all are capable equally maybe you think you would be able to do the Sydney to Melbourne Ultramarathon?  Actually, picking strawberries or anything, bent over all day long is quite backbreaking.

If it's good enough for the young backpackers from overseas, why wouldn't it be good enough for our own young ppl languisihng along on the dole and hopelessly addicted to drugs and alcolhol for lack of nothing better to do?

Why wouldn't our governments set up work schemes to get our young ppl into work and help farmers with their shortage of hands?

Nobody's asking oldies like yor (or me) to do the work, kazumi....

because there will be a need for a lot of extra labour , so even troglodytes will likely be roped in, and so in the name of humanity provisions should be made to enable successful transition from life on the couch, chips and coke to that of productive hard work

There is often more work available for unskilled labour than for university graduates looking for work in their field of education.

The whole thing is simple common sense. I just dont get why some people are so resistant to expecting young, fit people to take reasonable work when offered instead of the dole. It just reeks of the entitled, bludger mentality to me.

I went to a restaurant for dinner with my sister last night. She is a senior public servant in Aboriginal health. Since COVID she has been working from home and claims she is getting heaps more achieved than when she is in the office. When I asked her why, she responded that at the office people are just constantly making coffees, stopping in for a chat, taking long meetings which drag on for hours without achieving anything and generally just socialising instead of actually getting any work done.

Hopefully one of the good things to come out of the COVID crisis is that working age people will realise they cant just sit around and wait for taxpayers or bosses to spoon feed them every minute of the day and a bit of competition for jobs will encourage some employees to rediscover the long lost need for a reasonable work ethic.

And the weekly pay is often better than newly employed professional graduates receive, even if the employee actually has to work for it..

They will have priority as uni grads have higher status (  considered gap year with discount for later studies - extended visas for foreigners ) than long term unemployed and walking d.s.p ( 4 hour shifts per day, Wednesday off )

Then I woke up

there we go

https://www.msn.com/en-au/news/australia/backpacker-stream-dries-up-causing-looming-rural-labour-sho...

seize the moment  ! a new life awaits in the outback world of the harvest trail .... supportive employers , happy congenial team-members , appreciative locals , evening beer-garden parties , starry skies , mingling in farmer's markets on a sunny afternoon - be part of the renaissance of Australia -  300,000+ have departed our shores, and no immigration ,  and with spare cash trapped locally  there must be work opportunities now  !

Any short term pain and suffering could be considered part of the process towards a better life style
