There have been numerous problems in purchasing by many types of credit card. It makes sense, especially for those seniors, who don't have such cards, to pay by cheque, which is always linked to a viable bank account.
So cheque payment is a legitimate payment mode. Why isn't it used?
Did you know that if the cheque bounces, the seller ends up with a $15 penalty from the bank (that was the amount years ago, it could be more now) Many years ago, the writer of a bad cheque was confronted by Police at the door, but these days the receiver of the cheque is penalised instead. I suspect it is the bank's way of phasing them out.
Your best option is to open an over 55's account (no monthly fees) and then attach a Visa debit card to this. Just put in the amount you want to spend, so this also attracts no fees because you are using your own money. Anyone can open these accounts easily regardless of income. It is ok if you are a pensioner. Visa debit cards are fully protected under Visa's policies against fraud etc. the same as a credit card it, so no worries.
