I had some old roofing tiles listed ( over 300) & a member wanted to look at them A time was arranged & they came out & bought them. After they left I thought I had better remove them from ebay in case another buyer clicked buy it now. & they were already sold After loading them( pretty tiring) I did not think to tell the buyer to buy off ebay They lived 3 hours away & even if I did tell them there was a chance someone could try to buy them in the meantime & I would get a red dot for selling something I did not have.. We have no phone signal here so they could not have used their phone & would not want a stranger in my house using my computer I have now been suspended by ebay for breaking the rules What is one supposed to do in this situation

Under ebay rules there is no protection on pickup items as the buyer is supposed to inspect it and assure that it is in working order and exactly as described.
That still creates an open transaction on eBay, that technically the buyer is obliged to follow through with (in other words, just because someone can do something, doesn't mean that's the way it should be done).
What you're really saying is that it's ok for a buyer to intentionally withdraw an item from sale to reserve it for themselves, pending inspection and approval. But in all reality what it really is, and the way it should be treated, is merely an expression of interest (which by and large should not be able to leave a seller with a "sold" item that isn't actually sold, nor the buyer with a UPI strike).

Digi, are you saying that if a buyer uses BIN on a pickup item they should not inspect the item before paying but just hand over the dosh and take their chances?
Not this little black duck!!

Not exactly.
I am saying a buyer shouldn't buy an item if they are not sure they want to pay for an item.
I get that this makes some aspects of pick-up items impractical with how it's all currently set up, so I was in fact (though i recognise, not very clearly) agreeing with brer's earlier post about eBay possibly implementing some changes to how pick-ups can be purchased / sold.
