Double checking how to do this.
Buyer purchases and pays via paypal and then sends message to send to a different address. Normally I would cancel payment and get them to repay using alternative address.
How can this be done now without getting a defect for cancelling initial payment?

No idea, I just send it to where they want.
Admittedly I consider 99.99% of buyers to be legitimate and have yet to have had a need to revise that consideration, but that's just me.

I'm with davewill, I wouldn't bother cancelling, you have the message from the buyer with the changed address, if there is a problem (and it is really not likely) you can provide this as evidence to eBay.

If seller protection is a primary consideration, then I would personally just use the cancellation option (there's a problem with the buyer's address, which is true - it's not the one they want it sent to).
