Tracked envelopes lodgement proof issue

Hi. Just a heads up for sellers using regular Aus Post tracked envelopes. When you lodge them, get them scanned in over the counter, not all the numbers print onto the receipt.

I posted a bunch of stuff yesterday and only noticed because I had forgotten to take the sticker from one letter. I had my postage book with me and when I went to upload tracking numbers last night, panicked thinking I had messed up 2 addresses, both in medium tracked envelopes. At that point, I didn't know all the numbers didn't show.

Anyway, bolted down to the PO for 7.30 opening this morning, letters were still there, checked and I had the addresses correct so all good there. Still thinking they had made a mistake putting the postcode in, she rescanned, handed me the receipt and i set off to get morning coffee 😁

Then looked at the receipt and panicked again lol because the tracking numbers were the same, but with 2 different postcodes. Hightailed it back to the PO (phew are you exhausted reading this ☺) only to be told the machine doesn't print out the end numbers!! And not just a few numbers, 9 numbers no less!

So to summarise this little saga, time wasting exercise whatever, I actually discovered I had no proof of postage for all my tracked letters, past and present, because they all show on the receipt with the same tracking number. That receipt is the only proof we have, and the reason I lodge over the counter. So it really is vital to remember to remove all stickers and keep with your postage records. Yes I know I shouldn't have missed that one sticker but mistakes can happen. I personally see this as a potential issue and in future will be manually writing the last numbers on the lodgement receipt and getting them to stamp it.

As a side note, they only usually put the postcode in if you request it, and quite often look snarky when you do ask

re Post Office keying in postcode - my local guy told me this was impossible. So I went to another post office, lodged 2 items there, took the receipt showing postcodes back to my local post office. Local guy looked at my proof, looked very sheepish, and said he'd find out how to do it. He did, now all good and I don't have to take photos of each parcel label. Getting him well trained.

The lodgement form is meant to be proof of post on those, it's basically registered post without SOD - you fill out the tear-off one on the back (it's a PITA when you have a heap of them, though). You stick the green tracking label there and get the PO to stamp it upon lodgement (I get printed receipts as well, because I'm usually lodging parcels at the same time anyway and it can't hurt to have both). It's better to be doing the lodgement form, though, especially because the (up to) $100 compensation is unavailable without it if the package is lost (it's one of the T&Cs on the lodgement form).

Yes I do that also, although they sometimes get snippy about the extra 5 seconds it takes 😁 but that is still IMO not foolproof because it's manual. I suppose if thet stamp it? Thanks, I didn't realise you need that in the event of a claim. Good to know

Yes I've encountered that too. Most of them used to play dumb. I eventually found 2 PO's who don't pull that kind of doo doo. Funniest thing happened, well funny now wasn't at the time, but one chick went completely off her face at me when I showed her a receipt SHE HAD GIVEN ME 😉 the day before with postcodes on it. Caught her out big time, although I didn't act aggressive, I just queried how she was able to do it the previous day. Her pride then kicked in and to save face I guess in front of other customers, went balistic, yelling at me, "Oh I suppose you know how to do my job better than me. I've worked for the Post Office for 15 years....blah....blah.." Throwing her hands in the air. Made an absolute fool of herself. Anywhere else and she would have been fired on the spot, but that was at Mirrabooka. Anyone in Perth been to that PO? Let's just say they're a little club of nobodys full of their own importance

To add, they do it to avoid accountabilty, at least the ones who claim a lodgement receipt can't be given, yep one Asian manager used to try that on. That was with satchels too. I never went back there

I decided to double check to make sure my info was correct, but it's either been changed or (more likely) I misread it, as it actually reads:

"To make a claim for compensantion, you must retain a printed or official postmarked Lodgement Receipt and Tax Invoice to claim in the event of of loss or damage"
