When did final value fees get so high?

I've used eBay for a reasonably long time. I sold a camera yesterday for $550, and only received $476 in the payout. That's ridiculous. I never agreed to pay $74 (plus shipping!) to sell this item. Who would ever do that??

I remember final value fees being about 2.5%, not 12.18%! When did this change happen? Is there any way to sell things on eBay without the fees being so incredibly unreasonable? Or is there a better marketplace I should look to?

There's literally no point selling things on here with fees that high. It's insane. And yeah, in case you're wondering, I'm pretty **bleep** that this fee wasn't made blindingly obvious on the selling page (you have to read through the fees page, only linked in the fine print at the bottom).

This reminds me of many years ago. Maybe about 8 or 9 years?

A friend & I decided to have a garage sale and we looked up advertising fees in the local paper. Not the state newspaper or anything. The local rag. For 2 lines, it was going to cost us about $65 +.

So we skipped it and scouted around for other places online to advertise for free and found a couple.

The point is, we would have had to pay that advertising fee whether we sold a thing or not. Your fee only comes into play if you make a sale. The reality of the situation is you'll always be paying these sorts of fees to most major advertisers, and ebay is a major platform. You're paying for the exposure.

There are an awful lot of people around who are not interested in local pick up, they like to be anonymous, as far as possible. There are others who will be interested in your items but live interstate. Ebay caters for that crowd, where usually they know instantly that they have a purchase and can just go ahead with everything online (you'll notice auctions aren't as common on ebay now as they once were, probably for the above reasons).

So yes, if you want to avoid fees at all, you need to look elsewhere. Even gumtree and marketplace have some fees if you decide you want more exposure for an item though.

No, looks normal to me.

My rough estimate for all we sell is 15% ?(this is category dependent). 13.45% in your case.

Remember, in the past you paid final value fees AND payment system fees. Now, it all comes through eBay. In addition you may have advertising fees.

Yes this is absolutely ridiculous. I just sold a $78 product and got $55, I'm pulling all my listings off and going to Etsy. We can't make money on this

Good idea

You are aware of the fees before you list

Why proceed if you think it is to high, and then complain

Make sure you check out etsy fees first.

I have no idea what they are, I'm just saying it is a good idea to check, because it doesn't sound as if you investigated the ebay fees too closely if you now feel the need to pull all listings.

I don't mind if they go to etsy

Looks like they don't really read anything at all if they ended up here blathering on.
