avoid defects - send money

Rather than refund money from the payment made why not just send money to the buyer. This would use a completely different transaction.

Should work til they change the rules AGAIN!

It has never been possible to discount anything with free post items, I simply say in my store that there are no refunds for freepost items, I am quite happy for them to pay for each item individually and that is how they will be sent.  If they pay on a combined invoice they pay the full price.

If a buyer contacts me in advance about a discount I wiol offer to relist the items they want as one listing at an agreed price which includes a discouted delivery charge.

I do this also if people contact me before they buy - once we agree on a discount for multiple purchases, I usually amend one of the items to a "make an offer" set up to accept the agreed amount.

But not all eBay users are aware enough of all of eBay's foibles and in the case of a buyer who has just gone ahead, bought a few items and paid the total, I find it much less of a pain to just send them an amount to cover excess postage paid, and any discount I think they deserve for a multiple purchase. Personally, I think asking someone to mutually cancel a transaction, refund, and then start again (as somebody else suggested) todo the same thing, is asking too much.

Personally, I find all of these complications more of a pain than the fees issue, but I appreciate that I may be alone in this. I prefer the buying process to be as simple as possible (at least for the buyer), and most of my buyers have gone out of their way to express their surprise and gratitude for a refund or discount they weren't expecting.

I've refunded excess postage a few times for buyers in the past who have bought multiple items with paid postage and paid before getting a combine postage invoice and they are SOOOO grateful. It made me wonder whether they had done the same thing with other sellers and not received a refund, only to discover they had paid far too much when their items arrived in one package for $6.95 postage.

I've got a buyer at the moment who has already won 2 auctions with paid postage, and has bid on several others. As soon as she won the first one I sent a message asking her not to pay until she had finished buying. She's a low(ish) feedback buyer and was very grateful for the message as she thought she had to pay for each thing as she won it. She expressed her concerns about having an unpaid dispute opened and I assured her that whilever I could see her bidding on items, that won't happen.

I don't mind helping out new(ish) buyers, we all had to start somewhere. I figure if I look after the buyers, there's a chance they will come back
